Christopher Phillips

With profound sorrow, the family of Christopher Phillips announces his passing on July 1, 2019 at New York Presbyterian Hospital, where for the last nine months Chris was being treated for an extremely rare form of T-cell lymphoma.

 

Born on June 6, 1962, he was the son of Donald and Mary Ann Phillips of Rye. They survive him, as does his daughter Julia, his brothers Steven and Robert, and his sister-in-law Amy. He was predeceased by his sister Andrea.

 

After graduating from Rye High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, and a master’s degree in Special Education from the College of New Rochelle. He was most recently employed at St. Ursula’s School in the Bronx, a position that brought him much joy.

 

A tall, charismatic figure, Chris was a free spirit to his family and friends. This quality was most evident when his passions — music and sports — were in play.

 

On the playing field, he was fiercely competitive, unselfish, often unpredictable, but “all in” for his team. Some of his many friends became so during football practice at Rye High, where he might be heard giving his unique take to the coach. He was equally committed on the basketball court and the baseball field.

 

His love for music was full range: rock and roll, jazz, blues, and classical. His awesome record collection reveals the fullness of his appreciation.

 

Almost up to his last days, Chris Phillips was an athlete, who would often be found taking six-mile walks on country roads in Connecticut or taking in the beauty of Rye’s Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary.

 

His many gifts — and wonderful sense of humor — will be cherished and deeply missed by his family and multitude of friends.

 

A celebration of Christopher Phillips’ life was held August 18 at Wainwright House.
