Jim Harvey

Jim Harvey of Brewster, Massachusetts, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on November 26, 2018. He was 83.

Born in Rye, New York, in 1934, he was the fourth child of Thomas and Florence Harvey.

The Harvey family has deep roots in Rye. In 1843, brothers James, George, and William, arrived in 1843 from Wigtoun, Dumphrieshire, (Lowland) Scotland. James and George settled in Rye and did farming work for Benjamin and Hannah Mead, who owned property that is today owned by The Osborn.

The youngest brother, William, became a citizen while living in Bridgeport. In 1863, he was drafted into a Connecticut Heavy Artillery unit and died four years later, in Muscadine, Iowa, from wounds suffered in the Civil War.

George, Jim?s direct ancestor, bought six acres off North Street (West Harrison) from the Mead family. Jim?s grandfather Thomas grew up there and, with other migrant children, attended Rye schools which were on the Post Road and Purdy Avenue. From here he launched his business on the corner of Orchard Avenue and what is now Theodore Fremd Avenue, remnants of which can still be seen; two dilapidated barns sit waiting to be reused.

Jim Harvey graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1960 and went on to work as an accountant at W.R. Grace and then at Jaguar/Ford. He was a member of the United States Army Reserves. It was at St. Lawrence that he met Carol Turner, his wife of 57 years.

After raising their family in Woodcliff Lake, N.J., Jim and Carole Harvey happily retired to Brewster, Massachusetts.

He was a longtime and avid fan of the New York Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed spending time with their golden retrievers, nightly card games with his wife, and birdwatching from the kitchen window. Every member of the family looked forward to vacations in the Caribbean.

In addition to his wife Carole, he is survived by four children and their spouses: Leslie and Larry Sola, Wendy and Patrick Renard, Jim and Kim Harvey, and Kristen and Ryan Skenyon. He is also survived by his three siblings, Joan Toon, Thomas Harvey, and Ellen Wolfe; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
