Oh, What a Night, for Volunteerism

Magic and Merriment were in the air at the Rye YMCA’s annual benefit May 18 at Shenorock Shore Club. Supporters saluted three outstanding Rye volunteers and were thoroughly entertained by Stand-Up Magician Derek Hughes, who had more than a few tricks up his sleeve.

The Gold Spirit Award, the Rye Y’s highest award for volunteers, was presented to Laura Kelleher and Doug DeStaebler. Maureen Gomez received the Y’s Community Service Award.

A lucky 13 for the Rye Y, that’s the number of years Laura Kelleher has served the organization in a number of leadership capacities — co-chairing the Annual Campaign, as well as the Barefoot Bash and March Madness fundraisers.

As a board member, Doug DeStaebler has served as treasurer and president. He also led the Strategic Planning Committee, which developed a roadmap for the cause-driven and member-centric organization.

Maureen Gomez’ volunteer efforts have extended well beyond her own community. Well-known as an advocate for pedestrian safety who has served on Rye’s Traffic and Pedestrian Safety and Shared Roadways committees, she is also currently president of the board of the Carver Center and devotes time and energy to Part of the Solution (POTS) in the Bronx.

Proceeds from the Magic and Merriment event will support the Y Cares Financial Assistance program, which allows the Rye Y to keep a powerful promise to the community: No one will ever be turned away from a Y program or activity because he or she can’t pay.
