And The Art Awards Go To…

The Mamaroneck Artists Guild Gallery in Larchmont will host an opening reception for its 2023 Members Group Awards Show from 3-5. Juror Lisa D’Amico, an artist, writer, educator, and curator, is dedicated to championing the Arts and Education.

Leave Laughing

For over 20 years, Ladies of Laughter has served as a launching pad for female comedic talent, from Amy Schumer to Melissa Rauch. This year’s show at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck features Jocelyn Chia, Sara Contreras, Marcela Onyango, and Marla Schultz. The curtain goes up at 8.

Earthly Delights at Untermyer 

Experience the magic and wonder of Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers during Family Fun Day from 1-4. The afternoon begins in the amphitheater with a magic show featuring Sara Crasson & Bamberg the Bear. After the show, families can: enjoy a leisurely hayride along the rustic carriage trail starting at the top of the Rock and Stream Garden and going down to the Ruin Garden by the lion and unicorn and back; learn a magic trick with members of the Society of American Magicians; create unique recycled art sculpture using repurposed objects like CDs and vinyl records, water bottles, small toys, and more; take a family-friendly adventure tour of the gardens; and fly a kite on the big lawn outside the Walled Garden.

A New Mix for Marsalis  

Revered jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis teams up with the innovative Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for a program that meets at the intersection of jazz and classical at the Purchase Performing Arts Center at 8. On the program are works by Debussy, Ibert, Lecouna, brand-new arrangements of works by Ravel and Gershwin, and the world premiere of a work by Antonio Garcia, commissioned by Orpheus.

Now Showing at the Bruce

Connecticut Modern & Motherwell

For three decades, Connecticut was a true international center of innovation in the arts. Although turn-of-the-century landscape painting has been justly celebrated at the Bruce Museum and elsewhere, the significance of the state’s place in the history of 20th- century modernism has gone largely unnoticed. “Connecticut Modern: Art, Design, and the Avant-Garde, 1930-1960” runs through January 7. 

Robert Motherwell (American, 1915–1991) is best known for the defining role he played in the history of post-war American painting. Motherwell cultivated a principled approach to abstraction based on his belief that “every aesthetic decision is ultimately ethical in origin.” His most famous series of chiefly black-and-white abstract compositions, known as the “Elegies to the Spanish Republic” was prompted by the historical trauma of the Spanish Civil War. “Robert Motherwell and Multiplicity” runs through December 3.
