Rye Club Swimmers Help Turn the Tide on Cancer

Every summer, hundreds of local swimmers sign up for pool and open-water swims to help the Swim Across America Long Island Sound Chapter raise funds for cancer research, prevention programs, and treatment.

This summer, swimmers from two Rye clubs, Coveleigh and Westchester Country Club, made especially big waves in the fight against cancer. The children who participated did so with the single goal of supporting young cancer patients. Westchester’s “Team Jane” honored Jane Hatch, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 6 and received extensive treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering. Jane is now a healthy 11-year-old who is about to start middle school. Team Jane raised $11,700.

Together, fifty-one swimmers from Westchester and 41 from Coveleigh raised $33,000. The proceeds will go to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Cancer Center, Cancer Support Team, and Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Since its founding in 1992, the Long Island Sound Chapter of Swim Across America has raised nearly $25 million.
