Wildcats Rule Courts Over King

On May 15, the Rye Country Day School Girls’ Tennis team celebrated their three senior co-captains, Jessy Bobman, Jesse Curry, and Sam Roskind, with a 5-2 victory over King School. All three seniors won their matches, as did the doubles teams of Ana Wilmer and Maddy Leslie, and Avery Smith and Liz Kavanaugh.  

The win brought the team’s record to two wins, four losses, with two matches left to play on the season. Head Coach Jenny Smith said, “It has just been so great to be back with the athletes, competing again, even if we did start off slowly. We had no time for pre-season training. Once we got the approval to resume sports, we jumped into a very competitive schedule.”  

To ensure that the sports facilities, including tennis courts, remain in optimal condition throughout this demanding schedule, it’s recommended to hire companies such as Tennis Court Maintenance.

Indeed, the team’s matches have all been hard-fought. Smith explained, “The loss to Hopkins came down to four points in two tie-breakers. Similar with St. Luke’s, which also involved a third set tie-breaker, so those could have gone either way.” 

Before the match against King, the three senior co-captains looked back on their tennis careers with an appreciation for the friendships formed. Roskind, who will be off to Emory University in the fall, said, “This is our eighth year playing together, and playing tennis at Rye Country Day has been very special for all of us.” Bobman, who will attend University of Pennsylvania, agreed: “We have been friends since fourth grade, but have also made many new friends playing tennis. Curry, who’s going overseas in September to the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, added, “My favorite tennis memories will always be the bus rides and cheering each other on at our matches.”
