Victories remained elusive for Rye High School’s varsity hockey team as it entered the final week of a regular season filled with challenges and tough opponents. Through last week, the Garnets’ record was 3-8, having lost six in a row after a lone victory against Mamaroneck on Jan. 10.

After falling two days later to Suffern, 6-0, the Garnets clashed with Clarkstown on Jan. 24 but ultimately fell short in a hard-fought battle. Final score: 3-2. Next, a rescheduled matchup against Pelham on Jan. 26, but Pelham’s dominant display resulted in a decisive, 6-1 defeat for Rye.

Subsequent games against Scarsdale on Jan. 27, Suffern on Jan. 31 and Ogdensburg on Feb. 2 further tested the Garnets’ resolve. Each time, Rye experienced setbacks and fell to all three.

With two games this week remaining in the regular season – the final one away at Mamaroneck on Feb. 9 – the Garnets were determined to finish strong. Coach Peter Thomas said he was emphasizing the importance of unity and resilience, and urging his team to remain focused and determined in their pursuit of victory. 

“We need to work as a team, and trust our teammates to do their jobs,” Thomas said. “That is how a team is built, and if we do that, we play well.”
