Rye Girls’ Golf Has Plenty of Reasons for Optimism

-David Singer

Rye High School’s girls varsity golf team has won more than its share of league and section titles over the past two decades.

Under Coach Rich Savage, student golfers have also made a habit of making team or individual appearances at the statewide finals.

This spring, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming girls season. For one thing, last year the team finished second in its local league, behind only the Ursuline School, an all-girls Catholic high school that went on to finish in second at the state team championship.

Also, the team expects three key players from 2023 – Laeticia Clauss, Matilda Glitterstan and Myla Bisceglia – to return this season. Sophomores Phoebe Lee and Tori Hobbins, as well as freshmen Anna Bankcroft and Iciar Garate, figure to play integral roles on the team as well.

Scarsdale High and the Ursuline School, with two of the top golf programs in the four-county Section 1 region, are also the first two oppo-

nents on the Garnet girls’ schedule this spring. The good news: Winning both those matches would put the team in position to compete for their league title.

Savage, the team’s coach, is hoping “everyone has a fun season and we are competitive.”

“We would love to be able to make the team sectional match at the end of the season,” he added. “There are [also] some younger girls in the lineup, and it is important they get ready to play in matches.”
