Rye Golf Gives Credit Where Credit Is Due

In response to continuing questions about the fee “new” members, as opposed to “renewing” members, paid to join Rye Golf Club in 2022, the Rye Golf Club Commission submitted a resolution to the City Council recommending an amendment to the 2023 fee schedule. The resolution was approved by the Commission at its March 22 meeting.

The resolution, forwarded to us by RGC Commission Chair Terry McCartney, offers members of the Class of 2022 a one-time credit to be used during the 2023 season or towards dues in 2024. The amount is the difference between the fee these incoming members paid versus the substantially lower fee existing members paid, approximately $2,000.

“The bottom line was miscommunication,” McCartney told the paper. “I was unaware of any promises that had been made to individuals who joined in 2022 that they would pay lower rates going forward.”

Since stating at the Commission meeting that he accepted full responsibility for the matter, McCartney has received community-wide praise.

Meanwhile, the new member fee for a comprehensive golf membership in 2023 remains $7,192 for residents. Those residents who joined in 2021 and earlier years pay $5,169.

“The City of Rye has always adopted our recommendations,” added McCartney. “Before we present a budget to them, we have coordinated with City staff.”

In response to our question about the Club’s general funds, McCartney said they have sufficient monies to install a new irrigation system and make necessary repairs. “But a new pool? That’s a massive and expensive proposition.” The estimated cost is $15 million and that’s a financial discussion that will be closely watched.
