Rye High Girls’ Basketball Garnets Earn Rye Rotary Crown

By Melanie Cane

In the first round of the Rye Rotary Girls’ Basketball Tournament December 16, the Garnets faced off against East Ramapo, whose coach is longtime Rye resident Doug Carey. The Rye girls got off to a strong start, ending the first quarter up 17-3. Teaghan Flaherty scored seven of the 17 points.

With such a healthy lead, Garnets Coach Dennis Hurlie made early substitutions. In the second quarter, the Titans seemed to find their bearings and scored 11 points, including a three-pointer and two foul shots. The Garnets racked up 16, equally distributed among Flaherty, Amanda Latkany, Ellie Dailey, and Julia Bateman. At the half, Rye led 33-14.

The Garnets dominated the third quarter and took a 48-21 lead into the fourth, giving Coach Hurlie the opportunity to play his bench. In the final quarter, East Ramapo outscored Rye 13-10, but the Garnets came out on top, 58-34.

Coach Hurlie summed up the win: “Getting off to a great start really helped. We knew we were the better team, but you have to move the ball well and make the extra pass to get the best shot.”

He added, “Most of the offense is falling on the very capable shoulders of Teaghan right now, but if we can get contributions like we did from Amanda and Julia we are going to be a tough team to beat.”

Rye won the Rotary Tournament on December 18, beating Greenwich High School 57-30. Senior captain Ellie Daley was named to the All Tournament Team. Sophomore Teaghan Flaherty won Tournament MVP.
