Rye High Girls’ Lacrosse: Ellie Hedges Scores 100th Goal in Garnets’ Victory Over Yorktown

By Mitch Silver

Rye’s Lacrosse team defeated Yorktown April 7 at home, 21-12, which is big news as Yorktown is a powerful team and one that overwhelmed the Garnets in Sectional play last spring.

But that wasn’t the night’s biggest news.

Senior attacker Ellie Hedges scored five goals on the evening, including the 100th of her Rye career. She describes how it came about: “Molly White was running with the ball toward the Yorktown net. My defender moved over to stop her, and I stayed wide. Molly fed me the ball. I was able to set myself for the shot, firing low to beat the goalie.”

Hedges, a four-year varsity starter, reached the milestone even though she and the rest of the team lost their sophomore year to the Covid virus.

“I’ve been playing lacrosse since the first grade,” she said. “I was a kid with lots of energy, and I love the team aspects of the game.

The last time a Rye varsity player scored 100 goals was 2019, when Leah Kenny did it. Leah now plays lacrosse for the University of Richmond. Hedges will play for Colgate University. “I think Colgate has the ideal combination of strong athletics and equally strong academics,” she said.

Has she chosen a major? “I’ll probably start off as Undeclared. But, I’m pretty sure I’ll wind up in Economics.”

Right now, the Hedges balance sheet has a lot of assets. With more to come.
