Freshman Max Twyman, who starred on the hardwood for the Garnets before taking a post-grad year at Brewster Academy, is in Columbus, Ohio, with his teammates on the SUNY Albany basketball team. They’re getting ready to take the Nationwide Arena floor against the third-seeded Oklahoma Sooners in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

They almost didn’t make it. Only a last-second three-point heave by Australian import Peter Hooley gave the 24-8 Great Danes the 51-50 win over Stony Brook and their third straight America East crown. The 14th seeds will have to be at their best against the Sooners, who can boast of wins over Kansas, Iowa State, Texas, West Virginia, and Baylor on the season.

Twyman’s dad Jay played Division 1 ball for Rick Pitino at Boston College.  Granddad Jack is a member of the Hall of Fame after an illustrious 11-year NBA career.
