Rye Little League Team Routs Dobbs Ferry

Rye Little League Team Routs Dobbs Ferry,

But Succumbs to Sherman Park

By Melanie Cane

In their first game of the summer, July 9, Rye’s 11U Little League team pummeled Dobbs Ferry 10-2. But the following evening, on their home field at Disbrow Park, they were on the losing end of a 10-1 blowout against Sherman Park.

Neither team scored in the first inning. In the top of the second, Rye pitcher Shepherd Griffiths got the first two batters out. The third batter hit a long fly ball triple. The subsequent batter walked. An RBI single scored Sherman Park’s first run and then a home run scored three more.

Rye’s batters made good contact in the bottom of the second, but Sherman Park’s defense kept them scoreless.

With a 4-0 lead in the top of the third, Sherman Park added two more before Rye ended the inning on a beautiful double play. Second baseman Tyler Canna fielded a grounder between second and third. He threw to shortstop Harley Goodner who was covering second. Goodner threw to Jack Connolly for the inning-ending double play.

Rye scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth. Billy Fallon hit a ground ball bullet down the third baseline for a double. He then stole third. The next batter walked and Tommy Broderick sent Fallon home on a single. Rye’s rally ended on a phenomenal ground ball grab by Sherman Park’s shortstop.

Despite the players’ struggles at the plate, Rye Coach Will Margiloff felt the boys played well. Since the team is playing three games in three days, they are forced to rotate pitchers and other infield positions three times. The league mandates that to pitch on consecutive days the pitch count must be 20 or under. A boy can pitch two days later if his pitch count is under 35.

Rye faces off against Port Chester July 12. (Details to come)
