Rye Neck Softball Hopes for a Repeat of Last Season

Last year, the Rye Neck High School’s softball team dominated its competition with a record of 23-1. The squad won the Class B League and Section 1 titles.

This spring, returning all-state catcher Clare Picone, all- section honorable mention pitcher Shelby Preisser, all-league shortstop Ariana Hammer and all-league first baseman Daniela Lori hope to win back-to-back championships. Captains Sam Golub, Skylar Williams, Picone, and Hammer will lead the squad on the field.

Rye Neck’s schedule has them facing strong opponents, including Albertus Magnus, Mamaroneck, Rye, and Valhalla. Challenges will include new team members filling key positions at first base and third.

Coach Joan Spedafino said the players take pride in their defense and continue to work hard at it each practice.

“My goal is to have this team continue to represent Rye Neck Softball to the highest degree,” she said. “To work together, encourage each other, and build the family unit we pride ourselves on.

“All of these girls have been a part of softball for so many years,” she added, “and now it is time for them to shine and grow as an athlete, student and, most importantly, a person.”

Rye Neck’s golf team finished the 2023 season with a 7-7 record. Top-performing players — senior David Golden McCarthy, who placed 23rd at sectionals, and junior Jacob Kligman, who missed sectionals by two spots — are back this year to make another run at the Section I Open, the regional tournament for individual high school players.

“I look forward to seeing all the kids improve through- out the season, and hope to see David and Jacob not only make sectionals, but with a high finish,” said Coach Mark Canno, now in his 20th year with the team.

Other boys to look out for this season include senior captains Nicholas Murphy and John Spicer and seniors Aidan Treacy and Tyler Schneider. On the girls side, senior Amelia Kligman and junior Abigael Weidmann are competing this season.

The top teams in Rye Neck’s league include Bronxville and Blind Brook. The team’s matches will take place at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Briarcliff Manor, Metropolis CC in White Plains, Siwanoy CC in Eastchester, Sunningdale CC in Scarsdale, Blind Brook Club in Purchase, Knollwood CC in Elmsford, and Hampshire CC in Mamaroneck.
