Good Rye Skating

The Rye Rangers Hockey Club moved from the rink to Rye Recreation for its annual picnic June 9. Founded in the early 1970s, the Club now consists of 450 boys and girls from age 5 to 18, over 20 youth teams, and a very robust men’s program.

As is the custom at this event, the Good Skate award is given to that member of the club who has gone above and beyond to help coach, manage, and organize within the organization. The award was created after 9/11 in honor of three players/coaches, Teddy Maloney, Ward Haynes, and Tommy Palazzo, who were lost that day. This year’s recipient is Terry Morris, an outstanding college player and devoted father, coach, and member. This past season he introduced goalie coaching.

The Rye Rangers Award was presented for the first time to that youth player who has demonstrated Good Citizenship, helping others whether as a role model, coach, or referee. This year’s recipient is Evan Ketchabaw, who has played for the Rye Rangers for 14 years, volunteered as a mite coach, refereed, and run food drives for 200 underprivileged kids.

The Good Skate was presented by Eric Bommer, president. The Rye Rangers Award was presented by Rocky Shepard, a longtime coach and player who hosts “All Things Rye Hockey”, the most popular Rye Record podcast this year.
