Heavy rains have postponed some April matches for the Rye Varsity boys tennis team, but team members now are ready to pick up where they left off.

The team sits at two wins and a loss, with the only match in the last week being a 7-0 out-of-league win against Pelham High School. But since Rye was elevated to a higher echelon of tennis play this year, that win has little significance for final standings and eventual playoff seeding.

Even with the most recent game rescheduling, Coach Susan Dickson has been impressed by what she has seen so far.

“The team continues to improve and the players all challenge each other to be their best,” she said. “We have eight seniors and a host of underclassmen who are excited to challenge them at every opportunity.”

“The doubles teams continue to improve and develop good strategies for ball placement and teamwork,” she said. “We have more depth this year than in years past.”

Rye’s transition to the “Power League” of Section One Boys Tennis has proven to be a challenge, as Coach Dickson expected. But the depth of the team and promise of underclassmen like doubles team Lou Kim-Reuter and Filip Glitterstam make the coach optimistic about this season on the future.

“The Power League has been tough and we expect some challenging matches to come,” Coach Dickson said. “The rain has been a detriment and put us off course a bit with both practice time and matches.”

This week, the team faces Rye Country Day and Horace Greeley. Next week they face area powerhouses Mamaroneck and Scarsdale.
