Rye Y’s 30th Derby Is One for All Ages
Call it the luck of the Irish, when hundreds of Rye Y Derby participants beat the heat wave on April 29 on a perfect day for racing. And best yet, former Olympian Eamonn Coghlin was on hand from start to finish.
The top female finisher in the 5K race was Louisa Sandes (21:26), with Jessica Bourne and Madeline Lee place second and third. The first-place male was Alexander Hildick-Smith (17:57), followed by Benjamin Hopkins and Shin Narita.
In the 5-Mile race, Matthew Kiplagat took male honors (25:31), with Alexander Arslan second and, Danny Wallace Periac third. Kira Garry (28:37) was the first- place female finisher, and 6th overall; Betsy Eickelberg and Elizabeth O’Driscoll finished second and third. Fourteen-year-old phenom Jonah Gorevic placed fifth.
After Healthy Kids Day music and activities, families participated in a 1-Mile walk-run-jump over Rye’s winter-worn streets.
