Stepping Up to Fight Cancer

Katie Kmetz

Katie Kmetz is on a mission, and it’s personal and purposeful. Starting January 20, the 15-year-old Rye High School sophomore is launching a six-week fundraiser on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If she raises the most money, Katie will be named the Society’s Student of the Year.

“I’m participating in the Student Visionary of the Year campaign in honor of my uncle, Mike Kmetz, who was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 3 and died, on May 9, 2006, from a brain tumor when he was only 23,” said Katie. “He was cherished by so many and known to be a genuine and compassionate person.”

For the last few weeks, Katie has been organizing events and seeking sponsors.

Join her on January 21 for an afternoon Hot Chocolate sale at 22 Bennett Street. On January 27, a kickoff party, sponsored by the Kmetz family, will be held at Barley Beach House. On February 2, if you grab dinner at Al Dente and dessert at Longford’s, part of the proceeds will go to Katie’s campaign. And there are many more events scheduled in February and early March.

“I’m happy to report that all of the money raised goes directly to LLS,” said Katie.
