Stick by Stick

Over their spring break, the Rye High School Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse team hosted eighth graders from San Miguel Academy of Newburgh. The visitors had a chance to play and run drills with their hosts and enjoy a hearty lunch courtesy of Post Road Market. They stayed to cheer the Garnets on to victory in their match against Lourdes.

This is the third year the RHS Lacrosse team has hosted SMAN students, and the Academy thanks them and the generous parents who contributed to the purchase of new sticks for each young visitor.

The Academy, located less than 60 miles from Rye High, is in one of the most dangerous areas of the state, in a city rife with gangs and drug warfare. Established in 2006, San Miguel is described as a “lighthouse” on the banks of the Hudson, serving as a beacon of hope for low-opportunity students who come from a local public-school system where fewer than 30% of underserved students graduate from high school. One hundred percent of SMAN graduates enter high school supported by GSP, the Graduate Success Program, which provides tuition assistance, mentoring, and tutoring for the student as he continues his educational journey.
