They’ll Be Back

A bridge? A tunnel? What does it matter to Long Islanders who are holed up on a sand spit and whose ability to get off-island for a day has been thwarted by the crush of traffic?

Rest assured, they’ll be back. The pressure is on; there are a lot of votes on Long Island, and someday the political circumstances may not be as favorable to Rye’s concerns. Consider the fact that former New Jersey governor Chris Christie (Republican) cancelled a proposed tunnel from his state to Manhattan the day he took office in 2011. Phil Murphy (Democrat) was elected last fall and the proposal is back in the news. Dreamers have it that it will eventually be extended under the East River and out to Long Island to give them a southern outlet.

Geologically, the Scotch Caps at American Yacht Club are at the end of the Berkshire Range, which I understand is an engineering inducement to look at Rye as the landing point for a bridge or tunnel

I say take the tunnel, but only if it exits on I-684, five miles north of Westchester Airport, or we’ll have another La Guardia.

Ancillary rights should be arranged beforehand to the rock that will be removed, so that Rye gets its share to bolster the west shoreline from Hix Park/ the Marina to Hen Island.
