A College-Bound Crew
By Melanie Cane
RowAmericaRye held a mock signing ceremony for 17 college recruits, 13 of whom are girls, on November 11. This was the rowing club’s most successful college recruitment year since its founding in 2013.
While spring and fall regattas were cancelled this year, Coach Marko Serafimovski did not miss a beat. He began Zoom practices immediately after the pandemic struck and the rowers were back on the water (practicing social distancing) by mid-June. They have continued to practice two-and-a-half hours, six days a week.
Co-captains Katherine Iuliano and Katie McDermott, both of whom will be rowing for University of California Berkeley, reported that, “The team has worked incredibly hard, wanting to match our coaches’ dedication. We have not taken any breaks since the pandemic began. We knew we had to focus on the larger picture — performing well as a team and winning Nationals next spring.”
Coach Serafimovski said that he is proud of his team and “excited to foster a culture where they can progress and succeed in all future endeavors.”
