A Lovely Sendoff to Summer

The forecast wasn’t promising for the 20th annual SUMMERFEST celebration September 1, but families were undeterred. They headed to Rye Recreation for old-fashioned fun and enjoyed quite a bit of it before the skies opened up.

As always, Doug Carey of Leaders of Tomorrow planned a full day of activities, along with Rye Rec staff.

State Senator George Latimer and City Councilman Joe Sack were among the 25 players in the Jack Curran Memorial Bare Handed Ball Game. Plenty also took part in the M. Zadlo Sr. Memorial Golf Challenge and the Cornerstone Cupcake-Eating Contest. When it was time for the Potato Sack Races, everyone looked to Assemblyman Steve Otis to keep score.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, the very popular Water Balloon Challenge and the Jarrid Amico Memorial Football Challenge were cancelled.

Couples moved indoors to dance to the shimmering sounds of Scott Wenzel and the Reddy Valentino Big Band Orchestra.

Lisa Dempsey, a member of the Rye Recreation Commission, was honored for her service to the City of Rye — through Rye Girls Sports and many community-based events.
