Twenty-four largely local nonprofit organizations received grant checks from the Rye Presbyterian Church Women’s Association at a luncheon on church grounds June 11. This year, the group again distributed a record $50,000 from the proceeds of its volunteer-run Thrift Shop.

Among the organizations receiving grants from the Women’s Association for the first time were groups serving children with special needs and new immigrants. Heartsong provides clinically-based music and art therapy programs to children with special needs from its White Plains and Yonkers locations. The Hispanic Resource Center of Larchmont and Mamaroneck provides tools to prepare new immigrant families to become self-sufficient and active members of the community. Other organizations receiving grants included Kid’s S.P.A.C.E of Rye, for after-school program scholarship discounts, and the Bridge Fund of Westchester, for interest-free loans and grants to prevent families from becoming homeless.

Open three hours a week during the school year, the Thrift Shop, located in the church basement, sells items for as little as 25 cents. More than 35 volunteers sort, price, display, and sell housewares, toys, collectibles, and other goods donated by community members.
