A Tree Program Grows in Rye

Rye Town Park will present a program for homeowners on selecting and caring for trees Saturday, September 29 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Rye Town Park will present a program for homeowners on selecting and caring for trees Saturday, September 29 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants should meet by the flagpole and sundial gardens. Come early for light refreshments.

The event is co-sponsored by the Friends of Rye Town Park, who are considering developing a full inventory of the park’s trees and shrubs to assist in care and development.

Arborist Frazer Pehmoeller of Bartlett Tree Experts Company will lead visitors through the park. He’ll talk about the kinds of trees found in the area and how to keep them healthy. Topics to be covered include preparing trees for storms, drought, diseases (such as the emerald ash borer beetle), and protecting them from construction damage and basic soil compaction.

Participants will have plenty of opportunities for questions and discussion. They’ll also be able to learn about helping with the Friends’ tree-planting project.

Pehmoeller has worked in the arboriculture and horticulture industry for over 30 years. He was formerly the Director of Historic Landscapes and Horticulture for Historic Hudson Valley.

Rye Town Park and the Friends hope that there will be many more educational programs at the park, as they believe that the Park can be a wonderful learning laboratory for how to maintain a healthy lawn area for support of wildlife and human enjoyment.

If you’d like to attend, RSVP to Rye Town Park at 967-0965. In case of rain, the program will be rescheduled.
