Anne York, a longtime resident of Rye, NY passed away June 14, 2021 at her home in Trumbull, CT. with her family by her bedside.

Born in Montclair, NJ, she was the daughter of Charles Broadwell Popenoe and Jeannette Brookings Wells. She grew up in Montclair and graduated from Montclair High School and Bradford Junior College.

In 1947 she married David Wainwright Avery and together they raised five children during happy years in Rye and summers in Aurora, NY on Cayuga Lake – the Avery homestead.

She worked in Rye for the Rye Medical Group, Riche’s Florists and the American Yacht Club.

Active in the community, she sang in church choirs her whole life and was a talented piano and dulcimer player.  She was a co-founder and volunteer at the Rye Presbyterian nursery and pre-school programs, still going strong today. She also worked as a volunteer and was a Board of Managers member of the United Hospital. She wrote a “100 Year History of United Hospital” for the hospital’s 100-year anniversary. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Bradford Alumni.

Mostly, she liked helping others and over many years worked with the Interfaith Council, Adopt-A-Family at Christ Church and helped found the Helping Hands for the Homeless and Hungry.

She divorced David Avery in 1971 and married Rye native and businessman Charles Moxhay in 1974. Together they served the community and loved to sing and dance at Rye shows – the Twig Follies, Rye Art Center, Coverleigh Club and the Woman’s Club of Rye.

In 1994 she and Charlie moved to Florida. She continued to sing in an Episcopal choir and the Lake County Woman’s Choir. She and Charlie enjoyed travelling a lot – cruises to the Panama Canal, Alaska, the Caribbean and trips to Kenya, England, Italy, Greece and Spain.

Charlie passed away in 2002 and a few years later she married a neighbor and friend in her community – Cornelius J. York. They travelled and had five good years in Ocala, Florida. After “Corky” passed away she moved to Connecticut in 2010 to be near her family. She lived in New Canaan for three years then moved to Teresian Towers in Trumbull. She continued to sing in a mixed chorus at The Trumbull Senior Center. She was a voracious reader and knitted up a storm crafting hats and scarves for the Seaman’s Church in New York. In her final years, until she was 92, she continued to serve, volunteering in a nearby nursing home and helping others in wheel chairs go to chapel.

Anne is survived by her son William (Linda), sons David and Chris (Karen) and daughter Carol. She is also survived by seven grandchildren – Sara Avery Webb (Paul), Byron Avery ( Katie), Katelyn Avery, Kate Anne Avery, Michelle Avery, Johnathan Avery and David Avery and four great grandsons – Deva Avery Webb, Damodar Webb, Blake Avery and William Avery.

She is also survived by her stepson Gregg Moxhay (Hazel), two step grandchildren – Wendy Wyckoff (Jay) and Matthew (Holly) and five step grandchildren Grace, Ryan, Lucy Wyckoff and Kelley and Charlie Moxhay.

She was predeceased by her three husbands, her son Thomas, her brothers Broadwell Popenoe and Peter Popenoe and his wife Doris Higgan Popenoe. 

Services will be held at The Church of the Resurrection in Rye at 11 AM on Friday, July 16^th. and she will be buried at Oak Glenn cemetery in Aurora, NY.
