The A team has won for five years, and, this year, it won by just one point. Carolyn Cruz, A team captain and Director of Tennis & Operations at Rye Racquet, said there’s been a lot of pressure year to year to win every point. She gives tremendous credit to the players for handling the pressure so well.
B team member Kate Jennings summed up their season: “It was the usual blend of good talent, excellent coaching, hard work, and great camaraderie — always a winning formula! There was tremendous depth on our team – strength up and down the lineup.” She added, “Our captain, Stefani Shavel, did a great job keeping us organized and on task. The coaching at Rye Racquet is always fabulous.”
Rye Racquet’s C team was neck and neck with Coveleigh this season but kept a one-point lead after week four. During the team’s last match, which was against Coveleigh, captain Young Kim and partner Paula Lapkin played on the final court and won in a nail-biting third set tiebreaker.
“We had no idea that the season came down to our match, since we didn’t know how the rest of the team had fared,” said Kim. “Needless to say, we were thrilled when we realized that our team had captured first place.”
We raise our racquets to Rye Racquet once again!
