Learn about new options for Medicare Insurance Coverage, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Rye library. A representative of Medicare Health Center.org will address and clarify the Supplement and Advantage programs for new and current Medicare beneficiaries, and provide a clear pathway for them to make informed coverage decisions.

 

Birdwatch

 

Audubon Greenwich will survey Read Sanctuary and the Marshlands Conservancy for over-wintering ducks, herons, hawks, and shorebirds, Saturday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

The Manhattanville College Music Department presents a Faculty Recital featuring Christopher Pfund, tenor, and Bruce Eidem, trombone, on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the West Room in Reid Hall.

Harrison’s Talented Youth

 

The Harrison Council for the Arts presents Youth Art Month, March 1-31. This annual exhibit consists of multi-media art reflecting the talents of students in the Harrison schools with works selected by art teachers in the community. 

 

An opening reception will take place March 2 from 1-3 p.m. at the Harrison Municipal Building, with entertainment at the Harrison Library at 2 p.m.

A Beauty of a Musical

 

The Rye High School Parson Street Players will perform Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” February 28 at 7:30 p.m. and March 1 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for seniors.

 

Lingering Landscapes

 

“Moments,” an exhibit of landscape paintings by Kiyoko Brown and Marge Wynne, will be on display at the Rye library March 4-29. An opening reception will be held March 6 from 5-7 p.m.

 

The exhibit explores moments in time, experienced, remembered, and interpreted by the individual artist according to her own unique point of view.

All About E. E. Cummings

 

Anthony Mason, CBS correspondent and Rye resident, will interview author Susan Cheever about her new biography of E. E. Cummings, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. at The Osborn. Cheever follows Cummings, among the most widely read American poets as well as an artist, essayist, and playwright, from his childhood in Cambridge, Mass., to Paris after World War I, to Greenwich Village.

Women, Take Heart

 

Join Dr. Sandy Lithgow in a discussion of heart disease — the leading cause of death in American women — and the associated risk factors, February 25 at 7 p.m. at the Rye Y. Dr. Lithgow will discuss lifestyle interventions that women can take to prevent heart disease to live a healthier and more balanced life.

Learn the basics of Microsoft Word, February 27 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Rye library. Learn how to prepare documents and how to save and retrieve them from computer storage. Printing options will also be discussed.

 

Learn about Memory Issues

 

The Junior League of Westchester on the Sound will host a Coffee and Conversation at the Rye library, February 27 at 9:30 a.m. to discuss memory issues from forgetfulness to dementia.

 

Have you noticed that your mom has become forgetful or that your dad is repeating stories?  Ever run upstairs only to realize you forgot why you were going there? Patricia Gaston, Care Consultant with the Alzheimer’s Association, will give an informative presentation on the broad spectrum of memory issues, including when intervention may be required.

 

Weight-Loss Primer

 

Dr. Kurt Waples of Larchmont Wellness will give a talk on Weight Loss and Exercise at the Rye library, March 1 at 11 a.m. Learn about the types of exercises that stimulate the “weight-loss” hormones and add them to your regimen.

 

Jandon Lecture

 

Purchase College welcomes Ben Cameron, program director for the arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, as the speaker for the annual Jandon Business of the Arts Distinguished Lecture. The program will be held March 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the PepsiCo Theatre. A pre-lecture reception will be held at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

 

This year, the lecture kicks off a series of events focused on entrepreneurship in the arts. On March 5 at 11 a.m., the Career Development Center is sponsoring its popular Artistpreneur panel, where Purchase students will hear from and ask questions of various entrepreneurial alumni artists who will share their career success stories.

 

New this year is Arts Doctors, a program that invites students to solve the biggest problems of the arts world today, from the effects of a carnivorous pop culture to the failing symphony orchestra. In a guided and highly interactive setting, students will form teams to identify and tackle critical issues and develop potential solutions. Arts Doctors will take place from 2:30-5 p.m. on March 5. 

 

Spin a Yarn

 

Join adult story lovers to share traditional and personal tales and trade tips on storytelling techniques. The Rye Storytellers’ Guild meets at the Rye library the first Tuesday evening of the month at 6 p.m. Each meeting is loosely arranged around a theme. On March 4, tellers may choose either “Fascinating Women” or “Spring and Renewal” as their story topic.

 

The Adams Family Over Lunch

 

The Rye Historical Society’s annual history lunch will take place March 6 at American Yacht Club. Be entertained with an inspiring talk by “President John Adams” about his wife, Abigail — the first modern American woman. Portrayed by renowned re-enactor George Baker, Adams will speak with affection and humor about life and times with his indomitable wife.

 

In these one-man shows, Baker has traveled across the nation, bringing John Adams and his family to clubs, universities, national conventions, Mystic Seaport, George H. W. Bush Library, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library.

 

The boutique opens at 11:15 a.m. The luncheon starts at 12 p.m., followed by the show at 1:15 p.m. Tickets are $60 for members, $65 non-members. For more information, call 967-7588.

 

Speed, Style, and the English Countryside

 

Curt DiCamillo, a noted authority on English country estates, returns for his second lecture at the Jay Heritage Center, March 9 from 3-5 p.m. Following up on his whirlwind presentation about the “real” world of Downton Abbey this past fall, he will give attendees a taste of the heady world of British horse, auto, and airplane racing of the early 1900s.

 

Learn about Goodwood House in Sussex, home of the Glorious Goodwood festival (thoroughbred horse racing), one of the highlights of the English social season, and Higham Park in Kent, one of the first centers of auto racing in the early 20th century. Stories of lions, murder, and movies, all mixed carefully with soaring ambition and stunning houses filled with sublime art come together to reveal fantastic stories that have left a residue for us to marvel at today.

 

The lecture will be followed by a Q & A and refreshments. Cost is $15 per person, $10 seniors, free for members.

 

The Hunger Issue

 

In order to raise awareness of hunger in and around our community, The Bread of Life Food Pantry will host a screening of the award-winning documentary, “A Place at the Table,” March 13 at 7 p.m. at the Rye library. The film highlights three Americans that struggle daily with food insecurity. Today, 50 million people and a staggering one in four children do not know where their next meal is coming from.

 

The film will be followed by a discussion featuring panelists from the Westchester Coalition for the Homeless and Hungry and the Westchester Food Bank.

 

Teen Times

 

Bringing Lego to Life

 

Tweens can attend a MindStorms Lego Robot workshop, March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Rye library. Participants will receive kits and learn how to build and program robots using pre-programmed sequences to see and modify the possibilities of their own robot and make it perform maneuvers of varying degrees of difficulty.

Back by popular demand! Begin the morning with a pancake breakfast and then learn to tap sap the old fashion way, March 1 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Rye Nature Center. Learn how maple trees produce sap and get a peek at the sugaring process in the Nature Center’s own sugaring shed.

Explore deep space with amateur astronomer and filmmaker Jeffrey Jacobs, February 25 at 7 p.m. Jacobs will present a slide show on the wonders of the universe.

 

Learn how to be prepared for emergencies, March 8 at 1 p.m. Topics include basic principles of survival, and what equipment, food, and supplies you need for home and on the go. Cost is $5.

 

On March 15 at 1 p.m., help with invasive plant removal, trail work, and beach cleanup.

What European dances found new popularity in early America? Join the Jay Heritage Center for a lively afternoon of songs, ballads, and musical manifestations of the Federalist vs. Anti-Federalist debate, March 23 from 3-5 p.m.

 

Harlem Ambassadors Exhibition Game

 

The internationally acclaimed Harlem Ambassadors take on the Rye Y team (consisting of local coaches and teachers) in a fun-filled evening of basketball showmanship featuring high-flying slam dunks, ball-handling tricks, and hilarious comedy routines, March 30 at 5:30 p.m.

 

Bring the whole family and experience laugh-out-loud comedy basketball for a good cause. A limited number of tickets are available for this event, which supports the Rye YMCA.
