A Tribute to a Jazz Legend

The Purchase Performing Arts Center invites you to a very special evening, Feb. 10 at 8, honoring “El Maestro” – NEA Jazz Master and 10-time Grammy Award winner Eddie Palmieri. 

Renowned Latin Jazz artists including trumpeter Ray Vega, saxophonist David DeJesus, and bassist Ricardo Rodriguez will take the stage to celebrate “El Maestro” and pass the torch to talented emerging artists, including the Purchase Latin Jazz Orchestra and select young artists from the inaugural Purchase College Latin Jazz Festival.  

A dazzling pianist, Palmieri has been a Jazz and Salsa institution for six decades.

Literary Lights

Join the Rye Free Reading Room on Feb. 15 from 7:30-9 for a conversation with historian Harold Holzer, recipient of the library’s 2023 Mayor’s Award. The award acknowledges an individual with strong connections to Rye who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the literary arts.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from the renowned Lincoln scholar as he discusses his newest work, “Brought Forth on This Continent: Abraham Lincoln and American Immigration.”

Native Americans in Rye

Drawing on the Rye Historical Society’s vast collection of artifacts, insights from local historians, and Lenape descendants, Joie Cooney will lead a program on Native Americans who once lived in Rye. The event will be held at the Rye Free Reading Room Feb. 27 from 6:30-9:30. A Q&A will follow the presentation.

History Over Lunch

The Jay Heritage Center invites you to stop by on Feb. 29 from 11:30-1:30 for a lunchtime lesson at the Jay Mansion. The subject is “Black History” in New York, Westchester, and Rye.” Discover the many landmark sites on New York States Path Through History and the County’s African American Heritage Trail, including the Jay’s, where the real-life stories of African American women and men, enslaved and freed, continue to be vigorously researched and shared.

Pack and lunch. Refreshments and dessert will be provided. The program is free.

Painting Your Thoughts

Popular artist/teacher Kathy Pasquale invites aspiring artists of all levels to paint with her at Rye Recreation Feb. 16 from 12:30-2:30. Follow her step by step to create a canvas entitled “Warm Thoughts.” All supplies included.

February Break Programs

An Appetite for History?

Over the February school break, the Rye Historical Society has planned a two-day program of food, fun, and history, “A Taste of History: Presidential Food Adventure,” at the Square House on Feb. 21 and 22 from 10-3. 

Through scavenger hunts and activities, students will learn about our nation’s presidents and how food influenced their lives and decisions.

Nature Calls!

When school’s out, families can count on the Friends of Rye Nature Center for workshops that delight and engage ages 3.5 to 10. During the February break, the Center is offering four programs from 9 to 1.

On Feb. 20, learn how “Creatures of the Night,” from barn owls to red pandas survive at night. Get ready for a sweet sensation, “Maple Sugaring,” on Feb. 21. Learn how maple trees produce sap and watch the sugaring process in the Center’s Sugar Shed. 

Decipher sky charts and design your own spaceship at “Out of This World” on Feb. 22. The week concludes with “Polar Science” on Feb. 23. Learn about magnetic fields and forces and poles.

The fee is $85 per child per day.

Recreation and Beyond

At Rye Recreation, there are a plethora of activities during the mid-winter recess for kids in grades K-8. Among them are Princess & Prince Academy, Phreaky Physics, Operation Ocean Camp, and Golf Enrichment. For the child who just can’t get enough sports, there is All Sports Camp.
