Y Derby & Healthy Kids Day
The Rye YMCA has a special day planned for the community April 29. Healthy Kids Day activities run from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The 5K and 5-mile races begin at 10:15 a.m. The 1-mile fun run/walk starts at 12:15 p.m. Enjoy delicious BBQ and awards after the races.

Walk for a Cure
The 3rd Annual Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk, in memory of Gigi Shanes-Hernandez, will take place April 22 at Rye Town Park. Last year, over 800 people participated and raised over $300,000.

The World in Abstraction
Wainwright House presents “Exploring Our World: The Abstract Eye”, an exhibit of acrylics by Rye artist Joseph Blumstein. An opening reception will be held April 15 from 2-5 p.m. The show runs through May 6.
The exhibit is a visual memoir, inspired by Blumstein’s life experience, from being raised in a Jewish Orthodox household, to his professional career in corporate America, to his world travels with his family.
Blumstein began to seriously explore his passion for painting in his 20s, first at The Art Students League in New York, and later with Albert Pels, a WPA artist known for his murals.
In the 1970s, a promising career with Westinghouse Electric sent Blumstein to Brazil, where he had little time for painting. After various South American and European posts, he returned to America. Back in his native New York, he worked in the fashion industry. “Vanity”, one of the paintings in the Wainwright exhibit, is a reflection of that period.
Retirement has given Blumstein time to pursue other activities. “Sun Salutation” is one of the paintings inspired by his new-found passion for yoga. “I wanted to paint
something that reflects the inner peace I have found through my yoga practice.”
Feed Me Seymour!
On April 20 and 21, Rye High’s Parson Street Players will give three performances of “Little Shop of Horrors”, the comedy horror rock musical best known for its bloodthirsty people-eating plant Audrey II.
Featuring three puppeteers and three Audrey II puppets, the musical is a story of star-crossed lovers and the not-so-lovable plant that makes their love possible. It debuted off-Broadway in 1982 and was made into a movie in 1986.
“I love these musicals because they showcase a small cast,” said Peter Green, director of the show. The show is choreographed by Jimmy Locust, who has performed at the Grammys, the MTV Music Video Awards, and the Academy Awards. “We only have a short amount of time to get this show up and running so it takes a superhuman effort on the cast’s part,” added Mr. Green.
In the cast are Coco Darelius, Dan Germani, Catherine Hedge, Danny Keller, Brad Krapes, John McCabe, Kayako Ono, Ariella Reidenberg, Chet Sternlicht, Ben DeMarco, Ross DeMarco, and Serena Mason. Sanoka Nomura designed the show poster.
Performances are April 20 at 8 p.m. and April 21 at 2 and 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 students, free for seniors.
String Quartet
The Westchester Chamber Music Society presents The Parker String Quartet April 29 at 8 p.m. at Congregation Emanu-el. A coffee and wine reception with the musicians will follow the performance. Tickets are $35. For more information, call 967-7399.

Rye Sports History
What makes Rye so good at sports? Find out from a panel of notable Rye athletes and coaches April 17 at 7 p.m. at Rye Middle School. Moderated by Athletic Director Rob Castagna, panelists include football coach Dino Garr; girls’ varsity soccer coach and former RHS soccer player Rich Savage; RHS Class of 1965 basketball star Steve Feeney; and RHS Class of 1989 football, basketball, and baseball star Gregg Draddy.
This is the kick-off event for the new exhibit, “History of Sports in Rye”. The exhibit is a review and retrospective of Sports in Rye throughout her history using objects and photos from the collection of the Rye Historical Society, Rye High School, and many private donors. It sweeps from the first Marathon run in Rye in 1908, includes the advent of Youth Sports, Origin of the YMCA and the Rye Y, Club Sports, Olympians, Professional Athletes, and the many teams and sports of
Rye High School.

Art-Filled Evening

The works of Rye Art Center instructors Patti Mollica and Daniele Hager will be showcased. Mollica is a published author and artist known for her energetic brushwork and bold use of color. Hager is a classically trained singer in standards, show tunes, and opera.

Discovery Workshop: Ghost Stories
Ages 7 and up can attend a short story workshop using the supernatural, the spooky, and spirits to inspire a well-crafted tale April 21 from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Rye
Arts Center. Even if you’ve never seen a ghost, learn how to bring fiction to life with the right structure, characters, setting, and the perfect words.

A Girl’s Best Friend
American Girl Doll returns to the Square House April 21 from 1-3 p.m. Girls ages 7-11 will delight in the tale of young Josephina Montoya from New Mexico. Spring Tree Exploration
Celebrate Arbor Day with an informative tree walk at The Osborn April 27 at 10 a.m. The arboretum is home to over 1,000 trees and over 100 different kinds of trees on the spectacular 56-acre campus. The walk will be led by Michael Penziner, nature enthusiast and longtime volunteer at the Rye Nature Center and the New York Botanical Garden.

The Rye Arts Center has great summer offerings.
At Creative Arts Program (ages 4-12) students receive a well-rounded, hands on arts experience with a little bit of art history thrown in. A focus on art movements and culture are incorporated into classes such as: drawing, painting, mixed media, creative movement, storytelling, and more. Runs Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. June 25 through August 10. Other morning programs include digital photography and ceramics.
Afternoon programming includes group classes in beginning piano and guitar as well as private/semi-private lessons in various instruments. Other workshops include Manga/cartooning, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, watercolor, Garage Band, writing, and analog/digital photography.
This year’s Musical Theatre Workshop is an adaptation of Disney’s “Aladdin”. This Monday-Friday, full-day program is open to ages 8-12 the weeks of August 13, 20, and 27.
