Swing and sway to the romantic music of the Big Band era played against the backdrop of moonlight streaming across the Long Island Sound when the Milt Gerver Orchestra performs on July 19, 26, and August 2 on the Playland Boardwalk.
Milt and his orchestra evoke the nostalgic music of the immortal bandleaders of the 1930s and ’40s like Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. Jive to the lively “In the Mood” waltz and the beautiful strains of “Moonlight Serenade,” or just sit back and enjoy the show.
All concerts run from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Also enjoy the weekly fireworks display at 9:15 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 813-7010.
Doo-Wop to Pop in the Park
Rye Town Park will be filled with the sounds of Billy & the Showmen July 23. This Greenwich-based band has earned its reputation as one of the most enduring Rhythm & Blues bands around. Their revue features the soulful vocals of the best singers in the Northeast, along with a strong horn section and a tight rhythm section.
On July 30, the Rye-based band, The Derivatives will perform. Get ready to dance and sing along.
The six-member Angelo Rubino Band will perform August 13. Enjoy a wide range of musical styles from the 1940s to the ’90s. Their selections include Big Band dance tunes, soft rock, Doo-wop, and Latin pop.
Some seating is available. Bring your own picnic or enjoy takeout from the nearby Seaside Johnnie’s.

In the Swing
The 24th Annual George J. Kirby Memorial Golf Tournament will be held July 22 at the Griffith E. Harris Golf Course in Greenwich.
Every year, over 300 Rye senior citizens are able to participate in cultural, educational, and health programs plus seasonal luncheon events, thanks to generous local business and individual sponsorships.

Since 2011, the Rye Historical Society has participated in the Blue Star Museums program, which offers free admission to all active-duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The program is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, a national, nonprofit network dedicated to supporting and connecting military families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America.
In a recent interview, Rye Historical Society Director Sheri Jordan noted that this nationwide annual program gives communities a chance to thank military families for their services and share with them America’s cultural and historical treasures. “Admission to our Square House Museum is free to everyone year round, but by participating in the Blue Star Museum program we are listed on the website www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums, so military families living in or visiting our area know about us and, hopefully, will include the Square House in their vacation and travel plans.”
Ms. Jordan further noted that the current exhibit at the Square House Museum, “Rye in World War II” may be of particular interest to military families of today. “The exhibit provides glimpses of the personal stories of some of the 1,438 men and women of Rye who served in the armed forces in World War II. The exhibit also examines the varied endeavors on the Rye home front to support the war effort, such as recycling metal, organizing civil defense plans, and much more.”

Good Reads at Library Bookclubs
The Rye Free Reading Room book groups have announced their reading selections for the rest of the summer. “I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman” by Nora Ephron will be discussed by the members of the Friday Morning Book Café, August 2 at 9:30 a.m. (Call 231-3161 for the meeting location.)
The Thursday Afternoon Book Group will talk about “Hunting and Gathering” by Anna Gavalda, August 8 at 1:15 p.m.
RFRR Does Windows
Learn about Windows 8, the new Microsoft operating system, that looks and functions differently from all previous systems, July 25 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Rye library. If you have a laptop with Windows 8, bring it to class, otherwise watch the in-house demonstration. This class is free.
Let’s Spend the Night Together
The themes for the Rye library’s upcoming Family Nights are “Library Jeopardy,” quiz show on July 23 (age 5 & up), “Science Tellers” on July 30 (age 4 & up), “Learn the Flamenco” dance instruction on August 6 (age 4 & up), and a “Can You Dig It?” name-that-tune contest with Graham Clarke on August 13 (age 4 & up).

Behind the Prints at the Museum
SPRYE member and Bruce Museum docent Arthur Stampleman will lead a tour of the museum’s new exhibit, “Dürer, Rembrandt & Whistler: Prints from the Collection of Dr. Dorrance T. Kelly,” July 25 at 11 a.m.
The Harrison Council for the Arts presents “Melange: Paintings by Norma Foege,” a Rye resident, at the Harrison Public Library August 5-30. Meet the artist Monday, August 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Foege’s passion for painting is reflected in her vivid landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Her technique is a cross between representation and abstraction with a particular fondness for the colorists and Impressionists.
Foege began painting as a child at the Brooklyn Museum where Moses Soyer was her instructor. She continued her studies at Pratt Institute, NYU, Hunter College, City College of NY, the Art Students’ League, Silvermine, and the Rye Arts Center. For two years, she lived in Paris, where she studied oil painting and exhibited at the Salon des Independents in the Grand Palais.
She received a Masters in Studio Art from the College of New Rochelle, a Master of Science in Education from Brooklyn College and a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Brooklyn College.
After 35 years, she retired from teaching to devote more time to painting and music. Her work has been shown at the Matters of the Heart Exhibition in 2013, Rye Women’s Beaux Arts exhibit in 2012, and various other venues.

Mello Cello
Attend a cello recital by Erika Teraoka, August 10 at 2 p.m. The talented young musician will perform a variety of classical works for the solo instrument.
In the Wild
“Lions, Livestock, and Living Walls,” an artistic study of community and conservation in Tanzania, will be on display at the Rye library through August 24. Artist Alison Nicholls has lived in southern Africa and works closely with African conservation projects.

New York, New York
“The Landmarks of New York,” curated by preservationist and civic activist Dr. Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, is on display at the Jay Heritage Center through September 1.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and Sundays from 2-5 p.m. Admission is free.

Can You Dig it?
Get creative on Fridays at the Rye library this summer. At “Dig It Up,” a special guest will show the collection of artifacts he has unearthed in his Rye backyard, July 19. Watch “A Bug’s Life” (G) on July 26.
On August 2, enjoy “We Dig Dinosaurs!” story and craft time. Visit with a scientist and get a magnified look at critters that live in the dirt at “Life Down Under” on August 9.
Take part in a scavenger hunt on August 16 and watch “The Neverending Story” (PG) on August 23.

Green Thoughts Over Lunch
Wainwright House presents an interactive environmental education series for grades 2-7. Upcoming sessions will be held July 23 and 30 from 12:15-1:30 p.m.
The program is co-sponsored by Grassroots Environmental Education. The cost is $15 for members, $25 non-members.
Treats in Store for Readers
Participants in the Rye library’s “Dig Into Reading!” summer reading program can celebrate their achievements at the Grand Finale Party, August 20 at 6 p.m. Enjoy the amazing antics of Franee the Clown, the awarding of reading certificates and raffle prizes, and ice cream sundaes with lots of toppings.

Marshlands Happenings
Join the staff on an exploration to find crabs, birds, and other salt marsh creatures, July 21 at 2 p.m.
A 25-foot seine net will be used to catch, study, and release creatures found in the salt water of Milton Harbor, July 28 at 1 p.m.
Arts for All
Stay busy this summer at the Rye Arts Center with a variety of activities. Camps include Digital Photography & Photoshop (ages 8 & up), Digital Film, Music Production & Animation (ages 8 & up), Cartooning, Manga, and Drawing/Painting (ages 8 & up), and Writers’ Weeks (ages 9-12).
The popular Musical Theater program returns with a production of “Pippin” the weeks of August 12, 19, and 26. Ages 8-12 will learn lines, songs, and choreography — and perform the play at the end of the week for friends and family.

Snap, Tackle, Hike!
Registration has begun for the 2013 Rye Town Youth Football and Cheerleading season. The organization was founded in 1995 with a mission to introduce the sport and the importance of team spirit to boys and girls of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
All equipment, including pads and helmets, is provided by RTYFC, which offers the following programs:
Flag Division: Ages 5/6 and 7/8, plus cheerleading for ages 5-8
Pee Wee Tackle: Ages 8-10 for both football and cheerleading
Midget Tackle: Ages 11-13 for football, and 11-12 for cheerleading
The cost for flag football and cheerleading is $150; tackle football costs $250. Some scholarships are available.
The season runs from mid-August until early November. Last season, 32 teams across all divisions and including boys and girls, participated. Games take place at local fields. For further information, go to www.ryetownyouthfootball.com.
