Bring Your Brushes Outdoors

The Rye Arts Center presents a plein-air painting class at Playland Beach on Saturday from 9-1. Larry D’Amico will lead the workshop.

Fathers, bring the kids to the Rye Nature Center on Saturday from 9:15-10. Enjoy the Center’s furry and scaly friends.

Song and Art Man

Enjoy a wine and cheese reception to celebrate the Rye library’s new exhibit by local artist and musician Christopher Brown on Saturday from 2-4. On display will be striking illustrations from his years as a newspaper artist and children’s book illustrator.

Along with his depictions of celebrities from the worlds of sports, entertainment, and politics, Brown will bring to life characters through lyrics and melody. He will sing such CD hits as “Go West” and “Hangin’ In.”

Restoring an Important Resting Place

Learn about efforts to preserve Rye’s African-American cemetery, a National Historic Register site, at the Jay Heritage Center on Sunday from 5:30-7. David Thomas, founder of the Friends of the African-American Cemetery, will describe ongoing research and restoration efforts.

Our Town in Artful Display

The Rye Arts Center has invited forty professional artists to paint the town, parks, beaches, landmarks, buildings, landscapes, and scenic beauty of Rye and environs on September 16 in a one-day, plein-air paint-out. The public is invited to a reception to view the wet works at the Center’s Performing Arts Room at 5. Don’t be late for the live auction, which begins at 6:30.

Additional works by the artists are on display in the gallery and will be available for purchase through a silent auction. For more details, visit ryeartscenter.org/painters-on-location.

Watercolors for Fall

The Rye Arts Center is offering a plein-air painting watercolor workshop for adults and teens September 23 from 1-4. All levels will reap the benefits of a lecture, demonstration, and hands-on application. Local artist Holly Rom will teach students to plan a painting from sketches to be painted outdoors, weather permitting.

The fee is $95, less for members.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

A new vinyasa yoga class begins at Wainwright House on September 11 from 9:30-10:30, and a new therapeutic class begins September 14 from 8:30-9:30. Both will be taught by experienced yogi Laurie Jordan. These breath-centric classes are for mixed levels and meet the multi-dimensional needs of each student. The former builds up slowly and is sequenced to counter the fast pace of life, while the latter empowers students to go inward.

Yin and Yang

Wainwright is offering Tai Chi classes with Stu Reis starting September 11 from 11-12. The Chinese exercise consists of relaxed, gentle, and fluid movements. Benefits include increased balance, flexibility, and vitality, as well as reduced stress.

How Do You Like Them Apples?

Join the Rye Free Reading Room’s Storytellers Guild September 12 from 6-8. Reap the rewards of sharing stories and storytelling techniques. This month’s theme is apples and apple pie.

High Resolution

Meet local author, journalist, professor Cheryl Strauss Einhorn at the Rye library September 12 from 7-9. Her new book, “Problem Solved: A Powerful System for Making Complex Decisions with Confidence and Conviction,” is about making high stakes’ decisions using her AREA method, a useful thought process that navigates around mental blocks and assumptions.

The Final Word

The Rye Free Reading Room is offering a two-session workshop on Microsoft Word September 14 and 21 from 10-12. Preparing documents, data handling, folders and files, editing, cut-copy-paste, and many other functions will be covered by former IBM exec Mike Negrelli.

New Paths for Seniors

Retirees can discover ways of enhancing their lives at a program at the Rye library September 14 from 6:30-7:50. Michael Amoroso, former owner of a marketing research firm, and Ingrid Gillespie, executive director of Communities4Action, will discuss what to expect in the transition and how to successfully navigate this life change.

By the Sea, By the Sea, By the Beautiful Sea

Thousands of volunteers across the globe will be cleaning trash and debris from local waterways and shorelines. Be part of the annual international coastal cleanup by heading to Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary September 16 at 10.

White Out Writer’s Block

Working on a creative writing project, but feeling stuck? Author, teacher, hypnotist, and lecturer Kristin Prevallet will help participants reconnect with the process at the Rye library September 16 from 11-12:30. Using techniques from hypnotherapy, she will free up the inner writer.

In-Flight History

Meet the author of “Images of America: Westchester County Airport” at the Rye Free Reading Room September 16 from 2-3:30. Kent Patterson, a transportation and history enthusiast, will recount the history of the airport from a seaplane operation in the 1920s to an airfield during World War II.

Yoga Party

Wainwright House is holding a festival of yoga and mindfulness for all ages September 17 from 11-4. The inspiring 99-year old yoga instructor Tao Porchon-Lynch is the special guest. There will be a Jivamukti yoga class, Meditations and Movement classes with Wainwright’s seasoned instructors, teens’ and kids’ classes, lectures, book signings, music, shopping, and food vendors.

SPRYE is holding a talk by local author Martin Keefe at Wainwright House September 20 from 3-4:30. Keefe will read excerpts from his inspiring — and humorous — memoir, “Taking the Measure.” The book begins and ends with the pain of loss and the emergence of understanding.

Sailing the High Seas

The Jay Heritage Center is hosting a talk with Sail magazine cruising editor Charlie Doane September 22 from 6:30-8. He will discuss his book, “The Sea is Not Full,” and share highlights of his seven transatlantic voyages.

Science of Life

Learn all about Ayurveda, an age-old preventive health system, at Wainwright House September 23 from 9-4. Charlotte Jernigan, a North American Ayurveda Medical Association practitioner, will teach participants how to respond to their individual body-mind type and the imbalances that crop up from day to day and season to season. Take away practical tips and eating habits for improving well-being.

“Butterfly Man” Dwayne Taylor will make a presentation about the decline of monarch butterflies at Edith Read Sanctuary September 23 at 1. He will discuss raising them from egg to butterfly before releasing them into the wild.

Coastal Cleanup

Double Feature

It’s time for family movies at the Rye library. See “Boss Baby” on September 21 from 1-2:40 and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” on September 22 from 1-2:35. The stories of a new baby’s arrival and a teenager finding his way are sure to entertain all.

Babysitters Club

Enjoy a night out while the Rye YMCA provides a safe and fun environment for the kids on September 22 from 6:30-9. Ages 3 months to 5 years will enjoy “Wheels on the Bus” storybook activities and a snack, while grades K-6 will take part in a straw roller coaster challenge and be served a light dinner.

The fee for the younger set is $15 per child for family members. The fee for the older kids is $20 per child. To register, visit ryeymca.org.

The Rye library is offering a design challenge September 14 from 4:15-5:30. The new Tappan Zee Bridge offers inspiration as teens design and build their own suspension bridge.

College Starter founder Jeff Hirsch will lead a workshop on the college application’s extracurricular profile and recommendation letters, September 19 from 6:30-8 at the Rye library. Through clear examples, he will examine the best ways to shine a spotlight on a student’s activities. Also, learn whom to ask for recommendation letters.

Participants will take home-guided materials to help them create profiles, as well as self-reflection forms.

Fun and Games

Learn to create a game using ROBLOX, a free online application, at the Rye library September 21 from 6:30-7:45. Users make games by coding and designing in a virtual world. Pre-registration is required at ryelibrry.org.

Ages 9-12 can make 3-D fidget spinners at The Rye Arts Center September 20 from 3:30-5. Learn to work in CAD design and discover the mathematics and design concepts involved.

Now, Voyagers

On September 23, American Yacht Club is hosting the Leukemia Cup Regatta to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The national campaign is a series of sailing events, which start at 7 and continue throughout the day, combining boating with raising funds to cure cancer.

This year, in addition to sailing, there will be paddle and kayak races for all ages and levels, as well as an exciting dinner/auction with the Chad Hollister Band from 5:30-10.

Cruisin’ on a Sunday Afternoon

The Federated Conservationists of Westchester and Edith Read Sanctuary will hold a benefit on September 24 from 10-1 and 2-5. Sail aboard Pete Seeger’s Hudson River sloop <Clearwater>, departing from the historic Yonkers pier. Local environmentalists will share the Hudson River’s history and ecology.

Jay Day

Families are invited to the Jay Heritage Center September 24 from 11-3 to celebrate American culture and traditions. Highlights will include live music, book signings, dance performances, a farmer’s market, craft vendors, pony rides, a petting zoo, house tours, and more. Also on hand will be the tastes of autumn, thanks to Boxcar Cantina, Lobstercraft, Meltmobile, Reddi Rollin Rooster, and Jimmy’s Soft Serve.

Children’s book author Robert Sabuda will conduct hands-on workshops. The two-time recipient of The New York Times best illustrated book award has over 5 million books in print, translated into 26 languages.

Also bringing her child-friendly horticultural lessons from the New York Botanical Garden’s Edible Academy is Rye’s Anne Mottola, who will read from “Wonders in the Garden,” a children’s book she wrote with her sister, illustrator Maria Mottola.

Aging-in-Place Movement

On September 25 from 5-6, SPRYE is gathering at the Rye Free Reading Room for a live webcast featuring Dr. Atul Gawande. His celebrated book, Being Mortal, continues to sustain a lively national conversation about living and ending well in older age.

Special Senior Moment

On September 28, SPRYE will hold its sixth annual benefit at Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison from 6-8. The honorees are Roz and Joe Carvin. Roz served on SPRYE’s board for six years and the couple has generously supported its mission since its inception.
