Archaeology + Marshmallows = Lots of Fun

The Rye Free Reading Room’s Summer Science Fun Club on Friday afternoons continues through the end of August. Today, children entering kindergarten through second grade will be answering, “what else can you do with a marshmallow” at 3:30. Those entering third through fifth grades will be digging for clues in an interactive archaeology presentation at 4:30.

These educational summer activities are presented by The Westchester Children’s Museum’s Museum Without Walls program. On August 29, the final two hands-on workshops will cover Tornadoes, Rainbows, and Science in Oz for the younger group and Straws, Sticks, and Bricks for the older set. Inside the Private Collections

S.P.R.Y.E. is taking an excursion to the Bruce Museum in Greenwich on August 26 at 11. The museum is hosting an exhibit of three private Greenwich art collections. One includes Italian Renaissance and Baroque drawings, while another features ancient Chinese ceramics, primarily from the Tang Dynasty.

In addition, the art of Andrew Wyeth, one of the most popular American artists of the mid 20th century, will be on display. Fee: $6. RSVP to director@sprye.org or call 481-5706.

Familiar Images
The mother/daughter collaboration, “Treasures In My Own Backyard,” continues at the Rye Free Reading Room through August 29. The paintings of Henny Johanna and the photography of Cheryl Selinka are close to their hearts and close to home. The pair’s striking images include local landmarks that everyone will recognize, from Purchase Street to Rye Beach and Playland.

Family Ties

Back to School Crafts
Celebrate the new school year at the Rye Y’s Family Friday on September 5, from 6:30-7:30 by making some fun and useful back-to-school crafts. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required and space is limited, so reserve yours today. Admission is free for Family members; $10 for youth/non-members.

 

A Boy and His Dog   
Families with children age 5 and up are invited to watch “Abner the Invisible Dog” (NR) at the Rye library on August 28 at 6. The thrilling movie is about a 13-year-old boy whose new science kit has a surprising effect on his pet sheepdog and best friend Abner. Together they can overcome bullies, befriend the girl next door, and save the day.

Paint Ball Trip
Kids, ages 11-14, are invited to join the Rye YMCA September 3 and head to Liberty Paintball in Patterson, New York. Supervised and refereed at all times by the Y’s professional teen staff, the group will have the opportunity to play well-organ-ized games on private fields. A bus will leave at 9 and return by 4. Swing, Putt, and Chip Before Summer’s End
Total Golf Adventures is bringing the golf course to Rye Recreation for a 3-day camp for grades K-8, August 25-27 from 9:30-12:30. TGA Premier Junior Golf teaches swing fundamentals, rules, and etiquette while using technologically advanced and safe-training golf balls and junior clubs. Equipment will be provided and all skill levels are welcome. Fee: $190 residents; $215 non-residents. Call 967-2125 to register.

 

Socialize with Sven
The Rye Free Reading Room invites the newest school students to a K-Day Social Open House on September 13, from 2 to 4. Kindergarteners can meet and greet their fellow classmates, get their very own library cards, and take a ride on Sven the Reindeer of “Frozen” fame. There will also be yummy refreshments and the chance to have a picture taken with Sven. Pre-registration is required. Sign up in the Children’s Room.

True Grit
Greg O’Brien, an award-winning investigative reporter, will speak about his struggle with early onset Alzheimer’s at the Rye Free Reading Room, September 6 at 10. O’Brien, a former Rye resident, relies on long-term memory and skill, coupled with well-developed journalistic grit.
Having written frankly about his journey with the disease in “On Pluto: Inside the Mind of Alzheimer’s,” a trail-blazing roadmap for a generation, the author will discuss how to fight it and how not to give up.

Shine On, Storytellers
Join the Rye Storytellers’ Guild at the Rye Free Reading Room on September 9 at 6 to share traditional and personal tales, as well as storytelling tips. The topic will be “Harvest Moon,” so there’s no telling just how much tellers and listeners will be illuminated. All welcome.

 

Passion for Poetry
A lively poetry meeting, led by Michael Alcee, will be held at the Rye Free Reading Room on August 28 at 6:30. In the words of Leonardo da Vinci, “Poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen,” and the library is giving poetry lovers the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about contemporary works.

 

The Rye Library Does Windows!
The Rye Free Reading Room will offer a free two-part workshop for new computer users and those needing a refresher course on September 11 and 18, from 10 to 12. Windows 7 System will be covered, along with programs, preparing documents, setting up folders, saving, retrieving, and deleting files, and printing. Participants should plan to attend both sessions to get the full benefit. Not necessary to pre-register.

 

Pen Your Life Story
The Rye library invites all to write their memoirs at workshops on September 13 and 27 at 11. Leave a legacy for your children and grandchildren or record your life to lift your spirits. In the first workshop, published author Carol Costa will lead participants gently and safely down the path of yesterday. The second will focus on structure. Bring a notebook, writing implements, and your memories.

Health & Well-Being Expo
Join Wainwright House for a day of presentations and mini classes on September 14, from 10:30-4.  Find out what you always wanted to know about holistic practices and are curious to try. Keynote speaker Greg O’Brien will discuss his personal experience with early onset Alzheimer’s. 

In addition, sample the classes for fall with $5 mini-audit classes. Some of the selections include yoga, mandalas, soul vision, life transition, Native American spirituality, and Weight Is Over. Visitors may also meet with practitioners of reflexology, astrology, acupressure, hypnosis, massage, chakra, tarot, and Emotional Freedom Techniques. Lunch by Rachel’s Gourmet is available.

 

Mid-Century Mind at Play
The Rye Arts Center Gallery is presenting a solo retrospective, debuting the private whimsical paper sculptures of design genius Irving Harper at the Rye Arts Center, September 14-November 8. Curated by Katharine Dufault and Jeff Taylor, the exhibit will open with a reception on September 14, from 1-3.  Known for his iconic contributions to the George Nelson Office, including the 1949 Ball Clock, Herman Miller logo, and the 1956 Marshmallow sofa, Harper’s personal creations have never before been shared publicly. n
