Fathers and Furry Creatures
Dads and their kids, ages 3-6, are invited to drop by the Rye Nature Center on Saturday at 9:15 for a fun-filled animal adventure. The fee is $10 for members, $15 non-members.
An opening reception for an exhibit of works by Lusandre Chaudruc will be held at the Rye library on Saturday from 1-3. A Chappaqua native who studied at Western College for Women and the Fashion Institute of Technology, Chaudruc’s photo silkscreen and embossing piece won best of show at a Mamaroneck Artists exhibit.
Head of a textile design studio for 30 years, Chaudruc has fashioned works for such icons as Ralph Lauren, Chanel, and Wamsutta. The show runs through November 28.
Duct Tape Craze
The Rye Arts Center will hold a Wearable Art workshop for adults on Saturday from 10-12. Learn how to make a no-sew clutch bag out of duct tape! All tape and bag hardware will be supplied. The fee is $35. Members will receive a discount. Register at ryeartscenter.org.
Who Is That Beautiful Lady Behind the Mask?
Find out at Wainwright House’s third annual Masquerade Party on Saturday at 6:30. The special evening includes hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dancing, and a full bar. A fabulous auction boasts a wilderness adventure, paddleboard yoga lessons, and a weekend getaway.
Proceeds will benefit Wainwright’s outreach programs, scholarships, and the maintenance of the historic home, which has served as an holistic center since 1951. Tickets are $150 per person. RSVP at wainwright.org or by calling 967-6080.
The Buzz on Bees
The Bird Homestead nonprofit presents the film, “Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?” on Saturday at 3 at the Rye Meeting House. Called “a revelatory documentary” by The New York Times, it offers a profound look at the global bee crisis from award-winning filmmaker Taggart Siegel.
Nearly half of our food production depends on bee pollination. The film weaves a dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists, and philosophers from around the world. Together they reveal both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.

Both Sides Now
Find solutions with intuition and practicality on Sunday from 1-4 at Wainwright House. The healing team of psychic Joan Carra and life coach Olivia Whiteman will help participants confirm their paths and achieve their dreams and visions.

The Sound of Angels
Enjoy soulful chamber music at Rye Presbyterian Church on Sunday at 2:30. The artists include David Chan and Rafael Figueroa, Concertmaster and principal cellist, respectively, of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and renowned pianist Jeewon Park.
The program will feature Ravel Sonata for Violin and Cello, Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia for Violin and Cello, and Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 60.

Howard Husock, Vice President of Research at the Manhattan Institute, will share the story of the Rye Meeting House on Sunday at 4 at the Square House. The small wooden structure, also known as Milton Chapel, moved to its present location on Milton Road in 1867.
Attendees will also learn about the early days of the Mill Town and its long history as a harbor and port of commerce.

Tech Savvy
Popular computer teacher Mike Negrelli will lead two workshops at the Rye library. Basic computer knowledge is a prerequisite.
>“Word II: Beyond the Basics” (November 12) will cover preparing documents using advanced editing features such as numbering pages, adding borders, and auto functions like capitalization and spelling-grammar checking. Sending documents and the Quick Access Tool Bar will also be demonstrated.
>“Picture and Data Handling” (November 19) will impart how to use Windows Explorer for the transfer of pictures from cameras and other media to the computer. Learn to set up folders, files, and flash drives in handling all types of data.
Both workshops will be held from 10-12.
Saving the Planet
View the shocking, yet humorous journey of an aspiring environmentalist in a groundbreaking feature-length documentary at Wainwright House on November 12 from 7-9. “Cowspiricy: The Sustainability Secret” follows intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today.

Join certified meditation expert and registered nurse Lucille Sollazzo, BSN, for a transcendent two-part lesson in meditation on November 14 from 9:30-2:30 and November 15 from 2-4.
Participants will receive a personal Primordial Sound Meditation (PSM) mantra, the specific sound or vibration the universe was creating at the time of your birth, calculated using Vedic mathematic formulas. Part II will offer the opportunity to tweak your meditation in order to develop a daily practice.

Journey for the Senses
Rye’s Élan Yoga will offer a True Edge Workshop on November 13 from 7-9. Workshop founder Ellen Blaufox, LSW-R, will help participants incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives by exploring and utilizing all the senses. Breathing exercises, meditation practices, and mindfulness techniques and strategies will all be discussed. The workshop will continue the second Friday of each month through February.
With over 20 years of professional experience, Blaufox is clinical director of the Sally and Anthony Mann Center RTF, which is the largest residential, psychiatric treatment facility for adolescents in New York State.

A Little Rye History
SPRYE’S favorite local historian and author Paul Hicks will talk about the exploration of “The Gilded Age in Rye and Beyond” at Wainwright House on November 18 from 3-4:30. The speaker, a Rye Record contributor, will share research he acquired during the process of writing a historical biography of John E. Parsons, an influential figure in Rye’s past. Admission is free.
Passion for Fashion
Back by popular demand, Tonia Tagliaferro will show women how to dress their best at the Rye library on November 19 from 11-12:30. The founder of The Art of Dressing, Tagliaferro will focus on developing a positive internal dialogue that changes the way you look and feel and builds self-awareness. Her fun and light-hearted approach takes the guesswork out of dressing and empowers women to look and feel their best.
The Law-down on Vaccines
Holistic Moms Network will present a talk on vaccine mandates at the Rye Free Reading Room on November 19 at 7:30. Scientist Eva Vanamee and attorney Susan Lee will discuss the HPV vaccine mandate bills, as well as two similar bills that would allow children of any age to obtain vaccines for STDs (including for HPV, hepatitis B) without parental knowledge or consent.
Party Like it’s 1621!
The Rye Historical Society and The Friends of Rye Nature Center will co-host a unique program celebrating the origins of Thanksgiving at the Square House Museum on November 21 from 2-4. “Exploring Native American & Colonial Life” will offer participants the opportunity to explore the tools, techniques, and foods commonly used by the early inhabitants of the area.
Afterwards, all can taste a sampling of foods common to the Native American and colonial diet. The cost is $10 per family and reservations are suggested, as space is limited. To register, call the Rye Historical Society at 967-7588.
Tales of Thanksgiving
Tellabration, an annual worldwide gathering featuring the sharing of stories of Thanksgiving and community, will be commemorated locally at the Rye library on November 21 at 7. Members of the Rye Storytellers’ Guild and others will entertain with tales meant for grown-ups. Bring a friend and enjoy this evening of refreshments and stories.

Hues of Women
Figure and still life painter Tracy Burtz’s “Art of the Study: Exploring the Emotions of Women” continues at the Rye Arts Center through November 21. Having recently returned to teaching at the Center, Burtz brings a wealth of experience instructing students of all ages and levels.
Who was Pablo Picasso? Find out at a talk given by the Rye Arts Center at the Rye Free Reading Room on November 12 from 11-1. The program, offered in conjunction with the current exhibition of Picasso’s sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, places the artist’s three-dimensional work in the larger context of his multi-faceted career.
Innovator and renegade, Picasso developed new styles and approaches to painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and ceramics throughout his long life.
SPRYE Masterpieces

Next up in the Rye Free Reading Room’s lunchtime movie series is “Meet Me in St. Louis” on November 9 from 12-2. Bring your own lunch to munch on while watching and enjoy a light dessert provided by the library.
The classic takes place during the time leading up to the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Young women learn lessons of life and love while preparing for a reluctant move to New York. Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien, and Mary Astor star.
The award-winning 2014 film “Still Alice” will be shown at the Rye library on November 14 from 3-4:30. A brief cider-and-donuts social time will precede the screening. Sponsored by SPRYE and the Rye Free Reading Room, the film follows the tragic journey of Alice Howland, a renowned linguistics professor with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Happily married with three grown children, Alice (Julianne Moore in an Oscar-winning performance) struggles to stay connected to who she once was in this frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring film. Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth, and Hunter Parrish co-star.
Mystic Impressionist
Join SPRYE for a docent-led tour of the Charles Harold Davis exhibit at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich on November 10 at 12. This retrospective, the first in decades, offers the public the chance to rediscover a leading American landscapist. The tour is $6.

Road to Retirement
Rye resident Paul Tramontozzi will give an informational talk on retirement savings at the Rye library November 21 from 11-12:30. The KBK Wealth Management financial advisor will give participants an understanding about the value of dividends in a retirement portfolio, how to build a cash flow reserve ladder, implement an endowment style spending policy, and make a prudent plan to preserve purchasing power in retirement.
Join the Greater Online Community
Learn to create animations and video games with Scratch at the Rye Free Reading Room from 6:30-7:45 on November 10. Austin Olney will teach the general coding skills for using the visual programming language. Before long, participants will create and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world.
Designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, Scratch enables teens to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically.

>Paintball: Grades 6-8 can travel to Liberty Paintball in Patterson, New York. Chaperoned by the Rye Y’s teen staff, the group will play on its own reserved field. No experience necessary.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun

On November 14 from 7-10, middle schoolers are in for an evening of fun, food, camaraderie, activities, competitions, and gaes at the Rye YMCA.

Play Ball, Get Into Dodge!
What’s more fun than dodge ball? Join Rye Recreation at the Osborn School Gym on November 20, from 6-7:15 for grades 5 and 6, and 7:30-8:45 for grades 7 and 8. Kids will learn variations of this awesome game, including Team Dodge Ball, Dr. Dodge Ball, and Bombardment.
