The Rye Arts Center invites the community to an opening reception for an exhibit of works by figure and still life painter Tracy Burtz on Saturday from 3-5. “Art of the Study: Exploring the Emotions of Women” will be on view in the gallery through November 21.
Burtz has recently returned to teaching at the Arts Center. She brings a wealth of experience guiding students of all ages and levels. In her words, “I teach by studying all of the important concepts of picture making — composition, light and dark values, line, volume, space, and color. I teach students ‘to see.’”
Not Just Going Through the Motions
On Saturday from 2-3:30, Wainwright House kicks off a Conscious Dance series with “Grace in Motion: Let Your Yoga Dance.” Kripalu yoga teacher Beth Bierko offers a chakra fusion experience for all ages. Shedding Light on a Great Novel
Join a discussion on Anthony Doerr’s “All the Light We Cannot See” at the Rye library on Saturday at 2:30. Not only will readers gain further insights into the novel, but the gathering offers the opportunity to chat with other local fans. There is a growing Doerr fever in town, with the author set to speak in Rye on November 5.
Building a Stronger Bond With Nature
Awaken your connection to nature with Reverend Doctor Lora Kim Joyner at Wainwright on Sunday from 9:30-12:30. In this experiential workshop, learn to live compassionately, build relationships, and gain awareness to care for other species and ecosystems.
Expect music videos, slide-shows, group discussion, exercises, games, meditation, role-playing, and nature experiences. The cost is $55 for members, $60 non-members. Register at wainwright.org.
Middle School Mania
Tweens, enjoy an evening of fun at the Rye YMCA Saturday from 7-10. Every second Saturday of each month, middle school students participate in activities, competitions, and games in a supervised setting. Food is provided, too. Free for members, $5 non-members. Email johnrice@ryeymca.org.
Harmony at Home
Learn to create peace for your soul and space at a program at Wainwright House on Sunday from 1-4. Nidhi Huba will show you how to enhance every area of your home. Learn a blend of teachings from feng shui, vaasthu, mantra, crystal healing, and aromatherapy. Huba brings over 20 years of experience in yoga, spiritual healing, and the arts.

Columbus Day Excursion
The Rye YMCA invites students in grades 6-8 to travel with them October 12 to West Nyack’s Dave and Buster’s, where food meets fun. Meet at the Y at 10 and return by 4. Tasseography, the art of tealeaf reading, is back at Wainwright House on October 18 from 12-2. Psychic/medium Joan Carra will impart ways to interpret tealeaves’ symbols and listen to oneself in a fun, interactive workshop.

First up in the Rye Historical Society’s fall film series, named in memory of longtime resident and film aficionado Ted Levine, is “The Visitor.” The film follows a young immigrant couple moving to New York City. The screening will be held at the Square House October 18 from 2:30-5. The series is co-sponsored by the Rye Free Reading Room.
Brief opening remarks will introduce each film and light refreshments will be served at each showing. “Lost Boys of Sudan” is scheduled for November 8.

Got to Get Back to the Garden
Musician and dedicated environmentalist Bill Oliver will perform at the Rye Meeting House on October 16 at 6. Oliver, who is known as Mr. Habitat, will play songs that bring to life the vital issues of habitat conservation. The acoustical guitarist will be accompanied by bass player Russ Davis.

The Jay Heritage Center is holding a Zebra Soiree at American Yacht Club October 17 at 7. Guests will enjoy an evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dancing.
The Center is dedicated to education and preservation at the national historic landmark home of American founding father, John Jay. The soiree will help preserve an American architectural treasure and its many innovative educational programs.

On October 13 at 6:30, the Rye Free Reading Room is hosting a college seminar that will cover a multitude of parents’ concerns. Maximizing your child’s admission chances, SAT vs. ACT, and the ins and outs of merit money and financial aid are among the many topics that will be discussed.
Fault Lies in the Stars
Wainwright House is offering an astrology workshop on October 14 from 7:15-8:45. Certified astrologer Pamela Cucinell will talk about the “Jewels in Your Horoscope” and demonstrate astrology’s relevance in contemporary life.

Restoring Public Trust
The Larchmont-Mamaroneck League of Women Voters invites one and all to a presentation by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on how to restore public trust in Albany. The collaboration between the LWV and Mamaroneck High School’s Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics class will be held October 14 at 7:30 at Mamaroneck High School’s McClain Auditorium.

Learn about natural and safe ways to alleviate pain at a workshop at the Rye library on October 15 from 10-11:30. Dr. John Thomas Giudice of Larchmont Wellness will discuss anti-inflammatory diets, manual and laser therapies, and exercises that improve strength.

Spreadsheets have you stumped? The Rye Free Reading Room is holding a class on their versatility and many helpful applications on October 15 from 10-12. Set up, saving to computers, retrieving, and printing will be addressed by Mike Negrelli who worked for IBM for many years.
Laughing Matters
Deepen a sense of joy in the moment at an Alchemy of Joy workshop at Wainwright House October 15 from 6:30-8. Esther Russell, founder and CLO (Chief Laughing Officer) of Joy Breaks Barriers, will share techniques, such as laughter therapy and interplay, to help participants enhance their sense of self and increase their ability to cope with stress.

Full STEAM Ahead
Join the Rye Arts Center for a lively panel discussion on “STEAM in the Community” on October 15 at 7. Panelists who have successfully integrated STEAM ideas and tools into the public consciousness will be featured.
Moderated by Stoked on STEAM, the discussion will focus on how this approach to learning sharpens critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Janice Matturro will teach participants to interpret their dreams at a workshop at Wainwright on October 17 from 10-1. A certified intuitive consultant, Matturro will cover how to recognize when one is dreaming about people and situations from the future and pass on psychic messages to others.

Doc Talk
Learn to effectively communicate with doctors at an informative lecture at the Rye Free Reading Room on October 17 at 11. Dr. David C. Leven will cover health care choices and New York State health care laws. Leven is the executive director of End of Life Choices New York. He has played a leadership role in securing legislation to improve pain and palliative care.
All in the Family
Explore how families are depicted in fiction at a discussion at the Rye library October 20 at 7. Books that will be discussed are “Hidden: A Child’s Story of the Holocaust” by Loic Dauvillier and “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr.
The Right Touch
Join SPRYE for “Healing Touch: Part of a Holistic Approach to Health Care” at Wainwright on October 21, from 3-4:30. Roberta Brown Budge, Greenwich Hospital’s Integrative Medicine Program Coordinator, will help participants explore the healing options offered by this program and give them a taste of the experience.
Daddy and Me
Fathers can share a fun-filled morning with their kids ages 3-6 at the Rye Nature Center on October 17 at 9:15. Expect to see the Center’s many animals for a special adventure. The fee is $10 for family members, $15 non-members.
Ecology Club
Children with special needs are invited to bring a family member with them and enjoy animal programs, hikes, and other fun science and sensory adventures at the Nature Center on October 17 at 3:30. Halloween Parade

Join the Rye Free Reading Room’s librarians for once-a-month snacks and chats about books that lend themselves to lively discussions. Grades 1 and 2 will read “The Wolves in the Walls” by Neil Gaiman and talk about it on October 24 from 3-4. Grades 3 and 4 will read “Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich” by Adam Rex and share their thoughts October 24 from 4-5.

Babysitters Club
Would you like the skills and knowledge to safely care for children? Babysitters-to-be ages 11-15 can attend a training session at Rye Recreation on October 27, 28, 29 from 3:30-6. Participants will develop leadership skills and learn to develop a babysitting business and basic first aid.

No better treat during Halloween time than meeting a genuine ghost hunter on October 22 at the Rye library from 6:30-8. (See feature on page 1.) Professional paranormal investigator Barry Pirro has over ten years’ experience in the field. Hear actual recordings of ghosts captured at haunted houses around Westchester County. Audience members will have the opportunity to share heir own ghost stories as well.
Great Leaf Hunt
Through October, the Rye Nature Center will be looking for the largest leaf one can find. The winning leaf will be put on display at their museum. Gather leaves from the Center’s grounds or your own backyard.
Gadgets Galore
Children in grades 3-5 can head over to the Rye library on October 16 from 4-5 for the monthly Science Fun Club. The focus is on STEM hands-on experiments.

On Your Mark to Fitter and Faster Swimming
Three-time Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce and National Teamer Zane Grothe are coming to the Rye YMCA on October 18 to help swimmers 11 and younger improve their performance. Check-in time is 12:15; the program runs until 2:45.

Ages 8 and up will have the opportunity to build a functioning crystal radio that doesn’t rely on power sources by using simple household items at the Rye library October 23 at 3:30. In the 1920s and 30s, crystal radios were used to avoid radio detecting equipment. See what signals are in the air in Rye!
Slightly Spooky Square House
Ghosts, goblins, bumps, and squeaks await visitors to the Square House Museum October 23 and 24 from 5:30 to 8. While wending their way through darkened rooms during this family-friendly event, attendees may encounter otherworldly travelers awakening from their 200-year slumber at old Haviland’s Inn. Just maybe they will catch a glimpse of George Washington himself.
Halloween-themed games and a “monster mash” dance are part of the haunted fun. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $20 per family, $10 for individuals.
Professional photographer Julie Stauffer visited Cuba and will share her images and impressions at the Rye Free Reading Room on October 24 at 2. With a photography group, she explored Havana Vieja and captured images of antique cars and architecture. The presentation will include a Q&A and a tasty Cuban treat.
The World Is Your Oyster
Peter Malinowski, director of both the New York Harbor School’s aquaculture program and the Billion Oyster Project, will give a talk on the endeavor to restore one billion live oysters to New York Harbor, October 24 at 3 at the Rye Meeting House.

Rye Reads Event
The Rye Free Reading Room invites the community to come together to read “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. The best-selling author and winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize will visit November 5 at 7. The event will be held at the Rye High School auditorium.
Doerr’s memorable novel is the story of a blind French girl and an orphan German boy whose paths collide in occupied France during World War II. Copies of the novel are available at the library.
Wainwright House, of course! They invite you to their third annual Masquerade Party November 7 at 6:30. Promising to be fun and fabulous, the evening includes a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dancing, and a full bar.
