The Westchester Board of Legislators announced May 23 that its Chairman, Ken Jenkins, filed a legal challenge to County Executive Rob Astorino’s signed management agreement with Sustainable Playland Inc (SPI).

The Westchester Board of Legislators announced May 23 that its Chairman, Ken Jenkins, filed a legal challenge to County Executive Rob Astorino’s signed management agreement with Sustainable Playland Inc (SPI). The County’s Board of Acquisition and Contract voted to approve an Asset Management Agreement with SPI April 18.

The Board of Legislator’s lawsuit seeks to annul that vote. “The ten-year agreement…is just a lease by any other name, and he knows well enough that leases involving the County for more than five years need approval from the Board of Legislators.” Jenkins did not seek a temporary restraining order, however.

Since last October, when Astorino signed a letter of intent for SPI, the Board’s Operations Committee has been evaluating four proposals to reinvent Playland, including SPI’s,

In formally announcing his lawsuit, Mr. Jenkins made no mention of that evaluation process, and did not say when or if the BOL will name its own choice to improve and manage Playland. In addition to the Board’s objections, a group called Save Rye Playland has petitioned against the deal between the County and SPI.
