Rye High’s boys lacrosse team ended the regular season with a 9-7 win-loss record and a third-place finish among the area’s Class C schools, behind only John Jay and Tappan Zee.
The Garnets split their last four games, all of which were played on the road. The first, at Scarsdale High, was an easy 14-4 win. Junior Tyler McDermott had four goals and one assist, sophomore Henry Shoemaker had three goals, and junior goalie Ty Ramachandran had 15 saves in the lopsided May 7 win.
Rye also trounced Harrison on May 9, by a score of 17-4. Junior Tucker Hess and freshman Henry Gilroy each had three goals, while McDermott had two goals and four assists.
Rye next traveled to Somers High School on May 11, where it played before a large crowd and lost, 14-10, despite a four-goal effort from McDermott. It was perhaps the team’s biggest disappointment of the season, as the Garnets did not play especially well. Three days later, they took on Ridgefield (Conn.) High School and, for the fifth time this season, fell short by just one goal, this time losing 9-8 in overtime. McDermott once again led the charge with three goals, Hess followed with two goals and three assists, and junior defenseman Matt Gianetti added two goals. Ramachandran, reliable as ever, made 15 saves.
The regular season did not live up to the team’s expectations, but now they eagerly enter the postseason. The young varsity team has been tested by numerous difficult competitors and has emerged from many closely contested games, several of them unresolved until the final seconds.
