Carvin Announces Bid For U.S. Congress

Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin announced his candidacy for U.S. Congress March 26.

Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin announced his candidacy for U.S. Congress March 26. He is challenging U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey (D), for the newly-drawn 17th District seat.

“Our country is facing serious and profound challenges,” Mr. Carvin said. “It is incumbent on us as responsible citizens to challenge the status quo that puts the nation at perilous risk at a time of great uncertainty.”

Mr. Carvin, 57, considered a run for U.S. Senate, but dropped out after other Republican candidates entered the race.

“If I am given the Republican nomination, I will proudly espouse our party’s ideals in every corner of this Rockland-Westchester district,’’ he said in a prepared statement.

Mr. Carvin, who runs a hedge fund and specializes in emerging markets, was reelected to his second term as Rye Town Supervisor in a landslide last fall. In an effort to streamline local government and lower property taxes, he has been working to eliminate the Town of Rye government, including his own job.

In the Town of Rye, he has cut taxes by double digits every year since his election in 2007, and lowered expenses by 25%. During his tenure, he has not taken a salary from the Town. Currently, he is working with CGR, a Rochester-based good government firm on a major study (cgr.org/ryetown) of whether the Town can be eliminated and its services taken over or shared by villages within the Town.
