At the June 13 City Council meeting, Mayor Doug French said it was his wish to make the appointment that night to fill the vacant Council seat. After some discussion, the Council appointed Julie Killian.

The vote was 5-1. Councilwoman Catherine Parker abstained, stating she preferred the seat be left open until “the public has had a chance to vote someone in.” Killian must run for election in November to complete Suzanna Keith’s term, which ends in 2013.

Councilwoman Laura Brett said the Council had a responsibility to reach consensus on important decisions. “With a tough budget season and a capital bond before us, we need someone who possesses some of Suzanna’s skills and has a strong financial background.”

Responding to criticism that the Council was predecided on an appointee, Brett said, “It’s unfair to assume that anyone was. Julie is a terrific candidate; she’s tireless and committed to Rye.”

Agreeing with Brett, Councilman Rich Filippi commented, “It’s in the best interests of Rye to fill this position. The amount of work before us is considerable and one of us may be unable to be here on a given night.”

Councilman Joe Sack thanked all three residents who offered to serve; Charmian Neary and Jason Mehler had also volunteered to fill out the seat for the remainder of 2012.

Councilman Peter Jovanovich thanked the three candidates for each taking the time to meet with him individually for over an hour. Killian was sworn in at the special Council meeting June 20.
