Council Passes Rock Chipping Law

The Rye City Council passed a rock chipping law by a vote of 7-0 at its October 6 meeting.

The Rye City Council passed a rock chipping law by a vote of 7-0 at its October 6 meeting. The consensus was evidently the consequence of give and take within the Council as several members described the compromise as “fragile”.

Chipping is limited to 38 calendar days, and not allowed during weekends, national holidays, and between Christmas and New Years. Property owners will be required to seek a permit from the City and must certify that their rock chipping project can be completed within the 38-day limit. Up to two “chippers” can be used at one time.

To facilitate flexibility, the new law allows builders to apply to the City Manager for a seven-day waiver to the law in the event of “unexpected circumstances” such as equipment failure, inclement weather, and other unforeseen circumstances. The City Manager’s decision will be final.
The complete law will be posted on the City’s website.
