Courtside for Michael Ice

The third annual Michael Ice Tribute basketball fundraiser at Rye High School on January 10 was a huge success. The day started with a basketball clinic, in which some some 65 kids participated, and ended with a Rye/Harrison basketball game.

In between, 22 RHS alums, including Ted Ice (class of 2012), played a game. Coach Chris DiCintio coached the “Ice” team, and Coach John Aguilar the “Rucker” team. Rucker was Michael’s nickname, after a famous playground/basketball court in Harlem where his father played and took his sons to see games. Liam McCabe Moran was named MVP of the game.

All of the adults at the clinic and alumni game volunteered their time, from the refs, Ted Livingston and Douglas Flaherty, to the coaches, to the high school custodians.

For the past two years, proceeds from the day have gone toward a $5,000 college scholarship for a Rye High basketball player. Criteria for the scholarship include a deep love of the game, membership in the National Honor Society, and being a great team and community member, as Michael was.

Mike O’Neill received the first scholarship, and Jay Little the second. This year’s winner will be announced at the spring award ceremonies.
