In recognition of National Foster Care Month, Osborn School fourth and fifth graders are asking schoolmates for $2 apiece to buy rolling duffle bags for foster children in the New York Foundling Hospital’s social support programs.
At the kickoff, students read essays which encourage friends to take the drive seriously and donate. Alan Shatz, director of community relations, talked about New York Foundling Hospital’s programs. One student asked Shatz how children end up in foster care. “All kinds of reasons and all of them bad,” he said. There are 13,000 foster children in Foundling programs.
The Dollars for Duffles drive is part of the Foundling Hospital’s “Cases for Kids” effort. The goal is to provide foster children with duffle bags so they don’t have to rely on disposable bags to carry personal belongings. The average duffle bag costs $40 and Bigduffles.com has a discount program set up for the drive.
