Feeling My Young Girl Oats

It’s not every day you meet a pop rock legend. Those of you of a certain age who remember Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, famous for their signature song, “Young Girl”, rest assured that Gary is alive and well and performing. Like a giddy tween, I caught a concert in Bridgeport on March 31.

While the Union Gap band members aren’t the originals, Gary is the real deal and he’s pretty amazing at 69, much like the other older rockers, such as Sir Paul and Mick. And he sounds fantastic. Who doesn’t remember the words to the group’s six gold records and top Billboard hits: “Woman, Woman”, “Lady Willpower”, “Over You”, and “This Girl is a Woman Now”? The middle and post-middle aged audience sang along in tune and even on cue and one woman made her way on stage with roses, making some of us very jealous.

But Gary did make time for the rest of his fans, autographing CDs and 8 x 10 glossies. Totally star-struck and speechless, I got his autograph and the photo here, which has been blown up and printed, but, better yet, I felt like a “young girl” again.

Fellow fans, note that Gary lives in Clearwater, Fla. with his 50-year-old wife (sigh), but is on tour throughout 2012 and will be coming to Tarrytown in June. Visit www.garypuckettmusic.com. Also check out YouTube to relive the fun memories.
