Finding Balance in a Digital World

Finding Balance in a Digital World

At the next “Heard in Rye” workshop, Thursday, November 19, the documentary film “Like” will be screened and a panel discussion will follow.

The film explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. It encourages us to self-regulate, noting that “social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share, and care … but is that what’s really happening?”

The panelists are: Max Stossel, head of Education & Content for the Center for Humane Technology; Scilla Andreen, director/producer and co-founder of IndieFlix; and Dr. Jerry Bubrick, senior psychologist at the Child Mind Institute.

Before joining the Center for Humane Technology, an organization of former tech insiders and CEOs dedicated to realigning technology with humanity’s best interests, Stossel was a media strategist and designed some of the same notification structures to distract students that he now criticizes. He provides a unique critical perspective on the role of technology in the classroom.

Andreen founded the IndieFlix Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing mental health, resilience, and kindness in schools. She is also the co- producer of “Screenagers” and executive producer of the “Angst” series. Andreen is on a mission to change the world through film.

Dr. Bubrick is a cognitive and behavioral psychologist who specializes in the treatment of OCD. Widely recognized for developing one of the world’s most intensive pediatric programs for OCD, he is a pioneer in using cognitive-behavioral therapy to treat children and teens with anxiety disorders.

As always, pre-registration is required for the “Heard in Rye” workshop. Visit www.heardinrye.org/upcomingevents.
