Garnets Top Pelicans, Eager for Playoffs
Rye High beat rival Pelham 2-1 November 4 in an intense, at times out-of-control game at Nugent Stadium.
Rye’s first goal was scored in the second quarter by freshman Lilly Whaling, assisted by Ellie Hedges. Co-captain Anne Daily scored Rye’s winning goal in the third quarter. Goalie Catia Lai had a strong game with some key saves.
“It took us some time to find our rhythm, but we ended up squeaking a win in a rough game,” Coach Kelly Vegliante said after the game. “We need to learn how to let the clock play in our favor.”
The Garnets are now 7-1 and at the top of the league standings. Their only loss was to Mamaroneck 1-0 on October 30, after shutting out their first six opponents.
Vegliante is waiting to hear if there will be playoffs and, if so, who Rye will play. There is talk of teams playing nearby teams instead of other league foes due to Covid-19. One thing is certain: the girls are grateful to have a season.
