Music Conservatory of Westchester honor students Melody Hsu and Derek Cheung, both pianists, earned first and second place, respectively, at the American Fine Arts Festival Piano Strings, Winds & Voice International Concerto Competition.

Melody, a Rye resident, performed a rousing rendition of Chopin’s Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11, which secured her an opportunity to play in the Winners’ Recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall this fall. Last month, she and four other winners performed with the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra.

The young pianists are pictured with Music Conservatory instructors, Svetlana Gorokhovich, at left, and Irena Portenko.
