Garnet Golfers Advance to States

Rye High Captain Alexis Hios won the Section 1 girls’ golf title with a score of 152 last week

Rye High Captain Alexis Hios won the Section 1 girls’ golf title with a score of 152 last week. She shot a 71 on May 21 at Beekman Country Club and an 81 at Whippoorwill Club on May 29.

Frida Henningsson placed fourth, shooting a 169. She’ll join Hios in the State playoffs this weekend at SUNY Delhi. “Winning Sectionals was one of my biggest goals for this season,’’ Hios said.

Rye Coach Rich Savage said the three girls who competed at Sectionals played exceptionally well during the second round. Christiana Villani finished 14th overall, earning an All-Section award, but missing States by five places.

James McHugh qualified for States earlier as a member of the RHS boys’ team. McHugh shot a 41 during Conference playoffs at Rye Golf Club last week. Henry Bailey shot at 39 at the Conference match and Jack Maresca shot a 40.
