The Rye girls’ golf team is on course to tally its second straight unbeaten season after wins over Byram Hills and Edgemont, and a tie against Ursuline Thursday.
On May 2, the golfers topped the previously undefeated Byram Hills squad at Brae Burn Country Club, 264-294. They beat Edgemont the following day, 255-285.
“We had a good day with another win,’’ said Coach Rich Savage, “and some newer golfers got a chance to play.”
With two matches left, the Garnets are 10-0-1. Last spring, the team finished with a 13-0 record.
The final regular season matches are at Rye Golf Club: Tuesday against North Rockland and Wednesday against Ursuline to decide the league title.
Rye High has beaten Scarsdale twice.
Against the Byram Bobcats, playing conditions were especially rough due to dampness on a chilly morning. The Brae Burn course is difficult to begin with owing to its small fairways, fast greens, and deep traps. Savage said the win was impressive because his team had never played there before and they were missing Alex Ostan, a top golfer who was sick. Entering the match, Byram shared Rye’s 6-0 record.
Senior captain Jen Lee had a strong round against the Bobcats, with a score of 39, or two over par. Against Edgemont, Lee shot a 40.
Sophomore Alexis Hios also performed well against Byram with a 46; she shot a 41 against Edgemont. Also contributing to Rye’s win were sophomore Christiana Villani with a 49, freshman Frida Henningsson’s 53, Caroline Whealan’s 59, and Hayley Antonucci ‘s72.
Against Edgemont, Henningsson shot a 45; Ostan returned and shot a 55. Rounding out the team were Luccia Villani with a 74 and Tess Munsie with a 76.
Savage said the key to the team’s success is that “they are excellent at supporting one another.”
Hios said it was great to capture another win, especially under those rainy conditions.
Lee said she’s been pleased with individual performances and hopes the team can keep up its winning streak.
