The Rye High School Guidance staff selected Phoebe, who demonstrated in an outstanding way, the following qualities: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Upon selection she was required to describe how she manifests these qualities of a good citizen. She then completed a 500-word essay, administered under the supervision of a DAR member. Without prior knowledge of the essay title, it had to be completed within a two-hour limit without use of reference materials.
This year’s essay title was: “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.” The focus question was: “How does one’s personal heritage affect one’s duties to our nation?”
Each contest entry is judged by independent, non-DAR judges. The winning entry is then forwarded through state and national judging channels for further scholarship consideration.
