Most of us were drawn to Rye because of its setting on Long Island Sound, abundant green spaces, award-winning schools and vibrant community. We also treasure its diverse housing stock, so different from the drab uniformity often associated with the suburbs. Rye homes reflect the city’s robust history that is alive in every old stonewall and street marker we pass daily but never really see.

Partly to thank for the town’s historic fabric are residents who honor Rye’s history and seek to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. Liz and Patrick Garrett are such a couple, and they’ve maintained what’s historic and beautiful about their 1840s home at 245 Milton Road while modernizing and expanding it to fit their family’s contemporary needs.

A founding Rye family named Cowles lived in the house from 1872 to 1940. Early on, they owned a vast track of Rye, running from Apawamis Avenue to where Playland Parkway is now located and from Milton Road towards Forest Avenue.  Cowles family property even included 26 acres of land where Playland is now located.

The Garretts were kind enough to allow us to share some photos of their classic and elegant house, lovingly restored and updated to make it a perfect family home.
