Gryphon Runners Open Season with New Coach, Great Expectations

The Holy Child cross-country team opened its season September 15, running against a dozen other teams at the Big Red Invitational in Somers. Holy Child finished in the middle of the pack, placing seventh with 186 points.

The Holy Child cross-country team opened its season September 15, running against a dozen other teams at the Big Red Invitational in Somers. Holy Child finished in the middle of the pack, placing seventh with 186 points.

 

Two Holy Child newcomers, Julia Preusse and Christiana Steele, competed in the freshmen girls’ 2500-meter run. Preusse finished 22nd in just over 13 minutes. Steele was 14 seconds behind, placing 26th in 13:19. There were a total of 43 freshman runners. The winner from, New Rochelle, blazed through the course in 10 minutes, 10 seconds.

 

Seven runners from the varsity team competed in the 5000-meter run. Junior Lauren Stricker placed 8th in a field of 88 runners, running a personal time of 22:11. Stricker was just a minute behind the overall winner, who was from Somers High School.

 

Senior co-captain Ellen Lautenbach placed 21st in 23:43; senior co-captain Amanda Carlson placed 59th in 26:12; sophomore Elizabeth Curcio placed 64th with a time of 26:23; and junior Gabby Vera placed 72nd in 25:53.

 

The invitational also was the opening meet for Holy Child’s new coach, Cathleen Dee. Dee ran for Georgetown University and Holy Child High School in New Jersey.

 

Coach Dee called it a terrific start to the season. “Lauren looked extremely strong in her first outing of the season and we are expecting great things from her,’’ she said.
